Beautiful trail on the Romberg, which circles the rather unspectacular summit. Whether you take this path or the one one floor lower - both lead to the Romberg Gorge, which ends in a waterfall. Behind it is a beautiful, enchanted trail to the Romberg Ponds. Be careful of fences on the ground and in the trail - tripping hazard.

Here you can let it roll. After "cranking" to Billtalhöhe, a descent like this feels really good.

The lower part of the waterfall (seen from Billtalweg) is even more spectacular when it has a lot of water or is frozen. A few pictures show it from there. But since this is a private road, it is difficult to get there.

Beautiful waterfall, which also invites you to linger. You don't necessarily expect who you drive along this route.

One of the few waterfalls in the Taunus. Quite sweet in the first part.

One of the few waterfalls in the Taunus. Emphasis is on little, also in terms of size.

The waterfall in the Billtal valley is a worthwhile destination - scenically charming and offering very different experiences depending on the route. It is easily accessible to almost everyone via the Pionierweg path - ideal for a short break or as a stage on a longer tour. If you want to explore the lower part of the waterfall, you have three options of varying difficulty: ⚠️ Respect nature & animals Two of the three paths lead through wild sections, some of which are retreats for wild animals. Please only use them when necessary and protect the flora and fauna. 1. Easy, but via private road From the lower Pionierweg parking lot towards Ruppertshain, then take the next turnoff to the right from the Ölmühlweg. Then straight through the Billtal valley, past the houses of the residents, to the waterfall (and if you want, to the Stoltze-Plätzi). Attention: Private road, officially forbidden. A friendly inquiry with residents can help. 2. Via the Hermin-Herr-Weg From the parking lot on Viktoriaweg, follow path 8 of the circular routes around the Rettershof or the Hermin-Herr-Weg (other side of the valley). As soon as the waterfall is visible, after a gentle left turn on the valley side, you will see a poorly maintained path to the right into the valley. Attention: Lots of dead wood, not an official path. Only suitable for experienced, sure-footed hikers. Leads to the Stoltze-Plätzi, then back to the waterfall. 3. Even wilder via a "forgotten" hiking trail Instead of descending at variant 2, continue towards Naturfreundehaus Billtalhöhe. Shortly before the campsite, turn right onto an old, overgrown path (trail marking still visible after a while on a tree on the left). If you have the feeling of being on a skid road, you are on the right track. The path is also marked on the komoot map. The path follows the valley back to the waterfall, but is very rough. After a while, a trail to the Stoltze-Plätzi becomes visible along the Rombach. From there, take the path to the waterfall.

The special feature here is the lively stream crossing of the Rombach and the view of the small, wildly romantic Rombach Gorge.

The Billtal Waterfall is considered one of the few significant waterfalls in the Taunus, featuring a main drop of approximately 9 meters. It's located in the wild and romantic Rombach Valley. Several hiking loops from Königstein im Taunus include this waterfall, offering moderate hikes. Sturdy shoes are recommended due to the terrain.
The Romberg Gorge and Ponds Trail leads to a scenic gorge that culminates in a waterfall. Beyond the waterfall, you'll find an enchanted trail leading to the Romberg Ponds. The trail itself is beautiful, circling the Romberg and offering a serene natural experience.
The best time to visit depends on the waterfall. The Billtal Waterfall may have reduced water flow or even be dry during summer months, so spring or autumn after rainfall are often ideal. The Möttbach Waterfall, while smaller, is particularly impressive and loud during the winter months.
Many trails in the Taunus region are suitable for families, though specific difficulty can vary. The easy hiking loop from Möttau to the Möttbach Waterfall, which also includes the Möttbachtal Nature Reserve and Möttauer Pond, is a good option for families. Always check route details for elevation and terrain before heading out with children.
Waterfall hikes in the Taunus region range from easy to moderate. For instance, the Billtal Waterfall can be reached via moderate hikes from Königstein, requiring good fitness. Other trails, like the one to the Möttbach Waterfall, are considered easy. Always check the specific trail description for difficulty, elevation, and recommended footwear.
Beyond the more prominent ones, the Taunus region has smaller, often seasonal, cascades. For example, the Waterfall on the Billtalhöhe Descent is found along a wide forest road, offering a pleasant surprise halfway down the descent from Billtalhöhe. Exploring local hiking maps can reveal other smaller, less-frequented spots.
The Taunus region offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous road cycling routes, running trails, and general cycling routes. These often pass through scenic landscapes, forests, and charming villages, providing a comprehensive outdoor experience.
For waterfall hikes in the Taunus, it's advisable to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes, especially since some areas can be wet or muddy. Depending on the season, layers of clothing are recommended. Bring water, snacks, and a camera to capture the scenery. During summer, be aware that some waterfalls might have reduced flow.
Many hiking trails in the Taunus region are dog-friendly, allowing you to enjoy the natural beauty with your canine companion. However, it's always best to check specific trail regulations or local signage, and keep your dog on a leash, especially in nature reserves or areas with wildlife.
While direct cafes at the waterfalls are uncommon, many hiking routes in the Taunus region pass through or near villages like Königstein or Möttau, where you can find cafes, restaurants, or traditional inns for refreshments. Planning your hike to include a stop in a nearby town is a good idea.
The Taunus region is rich in natural beauty. Beyond waterfalls, you'll encounter dense forests, picturesque valleys like the Rombach Valley, and serene bodies of water such as the Romberg Ponds and Möttauer Pond. The area also offers numerous viewpoints with expansive vistas over the landscape.
