The fjord represents one of the natural jewels of the Amalfi coast. Inserted by UNESCO, together with other places on the Amalfi Coast, in the world heritage sites in 1997, the Furore fjord consists of a deep crack in the rock at the bottom of which there is a 25 meter beach. Furthermore, Furore, with its 800-odd inhabitants, has become part of the "Most beautiful villages in Italy".

At this point, an extremely fascinating grotto invites hikers to take a little spiritual rest. In his text, Gennaro dell'Aglio vividly described the construction of this local sanctuary 35 years ago. In the rear, elevated part (which can be reached via a small ladder on the rock) there is a cross with a body. Further ahead there is a statue of the Mother of God Mary, which welcomes visitors. It has been invoked under countless titles throughout the history of the church, but especially in popular piety. Here it is the “Madonna della Pace”, or Mary as Queen of Peace.

Unique emotion in a sacred and beautiful place. On 8 May 1988 the first liturgy was celebrated by my uncle "Padre Vittorio Dell'Aglio" a Franciscan friar as a foretelling during the homily that the Grotta di Pietrapiana would be the destination of many devotees and visitors to pray to Our Lady of Peace. With my close friend Antonio Marra we set off from Nocera Inferiore to arrive in Pietrapiana bringing to the Madonna della Pace a small picture in memory of my uncle who unfortunately left his earthly life on 10 April 2002 with 50 years of priesthood. For me it was a beautiful particular tour but above all exciting in knowing and knowing the story of my uncle. I highly recommend visiting this spectacular place full of joy and peace.

The canyons in this region are known for their diverse natural landscapes. For instance, the Valle dei Mulini and Ruins of the Watermills (also known as Valle delle Ferriere) boasts a unique microclimate that supports lush, almost subtropical vegetation, including rare ferns like the Woodwardia radicans. You'll also find numerous waterfalls and natural pools carved by the Rio Canneto. Further south, Fiordo di Furore offers a dramatic coastal-canyon intersection where the Schiato stream meets the sea.
Yes, the region is rich in history. The Valle dei Mulini and Ruins of the Watermills is a prime example, featuring the ruins of medieval ironworks and paper mills that once powered Amalfi. The Ancient fishing village of Furore is another significant historical site, nestled amidst overhanging rocks, offering a glimpse into local maritime history.
The Monti Lattari offers a range of canyoning experiences. The upper reaches of the Valle delle Ferriere provide technical challenges with significant water flow, requiring specialized equipment. For a wilder, more advanced experience, Rivo Iarito on the Sorrento Peninsula features high cascades, including a 90-meter rappel, and a dramatic descent to the sea at Crapolla Bay. Due to the challenging terrain, it's advisable to go with experienced guides for technical canyoning.
While specific seasonal recommendations vary by activity, the unique microclimate of areas like the Valle delle Ferriere means it maintains a lush environment year-round. For technical canyoning, conditions are generally best outside of heavy rain periods to ensure safety and manageable water levels. Spring and early autumn often offer pleasant temperatures for hiking and exploring.
Absolutely. The Cave of the Madonna della Pace of Pietrapiana offers panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast, the Gulf of Salerno, and the Sarno valley with Vesuvius in the backdrop. Additionally, the Biscuit Cave, located near the start of the Path of Gods, also provides excellent viewpoints.
Beyond exploring the canyons themselves, the region offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous running trails, including challenging routes like the 'Grotta di Pietrapana – loop tour'. For cyclists, there are scenic road cycling routes, such as the 'View of the Amalfi Coast – Cetara and the Angioina Tower loop'. Mountain biking enthusiasts can explore trails like the 'Valle delle Ferriere Loop'. You can find more details on these activities and routes in the respective guides for Running Trails, Road Cycling Routes, and MTB Trails around Parco regionale dei Monti Lattari.
Visitors particularly appreciate the unique combination of natural beauty and historical significance. The lush, almost subtropical environment of places like the Valle delle Ferriere, with its ancient ferns and waterfalls, is a major draw. The dramatic landscapes, such as the coastal intersection at Fiordo di Furore, and the tranquility found at sites like the Cave of the Madonna della Pace of Pietrapiana, are also highly valued.
While some canyoning routes are highly technical, areas like the lower parts of the Valle delle Ferriere offer more accessible paths suitable for hiking and enjoying the natural environment. The historical aspects and unique flora can be engaging for families. Always check the specific trail difficulty and conditions before heading out with children.
For technical canyoning in areas like Rivo Iarito or the more challenging sections of Valle delle Ferriere, specialized equipment is essential. This includes wetsuits, helmets, harnesses, ropes, and descenders. Sturdy footwear is also crucial. Due to the challenging terrain and technical nature of the sport, it is highly recommended to undertake these activities with experienced guides.
Many canyons, such as the Valle delle Ferriere, can be accessed from nearby towns like Amalfi, making them relatively convenient. While specific public transport details for each canyon vary, the Amalfi Coast region is served by local buses. For more remote or technical canyoning spots, private transport or guided tours often provide the most direct access. Parking availability can also vary, so planning ahead is recommended.
