Castello di San Martino

Highlight • Castle

The Castle of San Martino is located within the park of the same name which extends all around for about 15 hectares. The two access gates are located on S.P San Martino and S.S Marittima II. The Castle was built by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, secretary of Pope Gregory XIII, who obtained around 1565 some plots of land from the diocese of Terracina to be able to build his own country house. The Villa Tolomeo Gallio, of Renaissance origin, was built between 1565 and 1569. The Palace is a square-plan construction with four corner towers which give it an almost “fortress” aspect; the entrance, represented by an ashlar work door surmounted by the Borghese family crest, leads to a large courtyard through a three-bay portico.

The Villa is owned by the Municipality which has renovated it and used the upper part as a convention center useful for organizing events.

The park surrounding the castle is very well maintained, there are picnic areas and many games for children. In the grove near the castle there is also a beautiful path of about 3 km among the centuries-old oak woods.
