Unfortunately, there was no water flowing during our hike. But the walk to the waterfall is a little adventure and also recommended.

Despite rain, unfortunately no waterfall at the beginning of March 25. It must have rained for a while beforehand.

La Palma is a great place to visit, and this itinerary is fantastic (including the "other" waterfall suggested by SiMone above). But the Cascada de Los Colores is a tourist trap. Actually: - It is not colored. - it is not natural, but a small, insignificant artificial dam - Looks 30 m high, but is actually only 3.5 m. - There is little water most of the year. That doesn't mean it's not worth the hike! It is just good to go there and come back and enjoy the beautiful trip. But do not expect to see such a magical natural phenomenon. WARNING: in some sections, the route moves away from the bottom of the barranco to avoid dangerous areas due to the possibility of rockfall and sudden flooding. Be extremely careful in these sections, especially if the weather has been bad or if you notice bad weather upstream. Finally, there is a section overhung by a large traverse rock that is difficult to pass, especially uphill. Better to transit by the suggested route, especially if there is a lot of water.

The actual waterfall currently (June) has little water. We discovered a good alternative. Shortly before the destination at the fork to the Cascada, we followed the left stream path and then found this wonderful place 😊. It did involve a bit of climbing, but it wasn't difficult.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some unique waterfalls to visit around Breña Alta?

One of the most unique and visually stunning waterfalls is the Colorful Waterfall (Cascada de los Colores). Located within the Barranco de las Angustias in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, its vibrant hues come from high iron content in the water and various algae, making it a memorable sight. The intensity of its colors is often best during wetter periods.

Are there any waterfalls accessible via hiking routes directly from Breña Alta?

While major named waterfalls are often a short journey from Breña Alta, hiking trails originating from the 'La Breña' locality within the municipality can lead to scenic spots featuring smaller, unnamed waterfalls, such as a 'Small Waterfall' and a 'Double Waterfall'. These are part of pleasant tours that include vegetation tunnels along streams, offering an enjoyable natural experience.

What is the best time of year to see the waterfalls around Breña Alta?

The waterfalls, especially the smaller, seasonal ones, are most spectacular during and after periods of rain. This typically means the wetter months, often from autumn through spring, when water flow is stronger, enhancing their visual impact and vibrancy.

What kind of natural features can I expect to see on a waterfall hike near Breña Alta?

Beyond the waterfalls themselves, you'll encounter diverse natural features. For instance, the hike to the Colorful Waterfall takes you through the dramatic geological formations of the Barranco de las Angustias. Other routes might lead through lush laurel forests, dense vegetation tunnels, and volcanic landscapes characteristic of La Palma.

Are there any other significant waterfalls on La Palma worth visiting from Breña Alta?

Absolutely. The Marcos Spring Waterfall, along with its neighbor Cordero, is a significant source of water channeled through tunnels. This waterfall falls through large vertical walls typical of the island's north and is a highly rated natural monument. The hike to it is an experience in itself.

What outdoor activities can I do near these waterfalls?

The areas around these waterfalls are perfect for various outdoor activities. You can find excellent mountain hikes, including challenging routes through gorges like the Angustias Gorge. There are also running trails and cycling routes that allow you to explore the diverse landscapes of La Palma.

What do visitors enjoy most about the waterfalls and surrounding areas near Breña Alta?

Visitors frequently highlight the unique beauty and natural spectacle of the waterfalls, especially the vibrant colors of the Colorful Waterfall. The adventurous hikes through stunning barrancos and lush forests, the cooling effect of the water, and the sense of immersion in nature are also highly praised. Many find the journey to the waterfalls as rewarding as the destination itself.

Is the Cubo de la Galga area worth visiting for waterfalls, and how far is it from Breña Alta?

While not directly in Breña Alta, the Cubo de la Galga in the northeast of La Palma is highly recommended for its lush laurel forest and the streams that feed potential waterfalls. It offers a tropical-like environment with dense ancient forests. It's a relatively easy hiking route that immerses visitors in a unique ecosystem. You can find more information about this area on visitlapalma.es.

Are there any specific tips for visiting the Marcos Spring Waterfall?

The Marcos Spring Waterfall is known for its impressive water flow through vertical walls. Visitors often describe it as the most beautiful and abundant of the spring-fed cascades in the area. Be aware that access can sometimes be restricted due to hazards, so it's always wise to check local conditions before planning your trip.

Are there any waterfalls that are more seasonal or dependent on recent rainfall?

Yes, many of the smaller, unnamed waterfalls, including the generic 'Waterfall' highlight, are highly dependent on recent rainfall. While they can be charming, especially with surrounding wildflowers, their flow can be significantly reduced or even absent during drier periods. For a guaranteed flow, focus on the larger, spring-fed waterfalls or those within the Caldera de Taburiente.

Can I find any waterfalls within the Angustias Gorge itself?

The Angustias Gorge is a dramatic natural feature that contains waterfalls. One specific waterfall within the gorge is noted as being well-hidden and best discovered from above, requiring a slight detour from the main trail. The gorge also offers refreshing pools for cooling your feet during your hike.
