Arure Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

Beautiful waterfall (approx.15m) and hollowed out stone. Also worth a trip in hot weather, as the path runs in the shade and you always follow the watercourse (cooling off included).

Waterfall in Barranco de Arure

Highlight • Waterfall

Wildly romantic route through reeds, past palm trees and along the stream - mostly in nice shade, but sometimes a bit demanding (be careful because of wet shoes on slippery rocks)

Equipment recommendation: waterproof hiking boots, one(!) hiking pole, no backpack or a small, close-fitting and insensitive backpack without hooks and eyelets. Why? A) The path is partly not easy to walk, if you can step into the mud or shallow water without worry, it becomes significantly easier. B) besides reeds, there are also thorny vines that can easily shred sensitive clothing and backpacks. C) there are passages where you have to squat deeply or go down on your knees to get through. A bulky backpack is extremely bad here - believe me - I had a large backpack with me. D) a pole helps to stick it into the river to maintain balance. But two poles tie up too many hands for the route.

September 5, 2024, Arure Waterfall

We walked the red route to the waterfall at the beginning of November 2023. There was a lot of water and we balanced from stone to stone so as not to get wet feet. That was no problem. However, you should be careful that the rocks in the area where the rope hangs that you can pull yourself up on can be slippery and that you need some stamina. Unfortunately, we had to watch the use of a rescue helicopter from very close up. An elderly woman had had an accident there. The tour guide on the island tour had already told us that this is not an easy hike.

The path to the waterfall is only suitable for experienced hikers. Sturdy shoes are a must. There are several places where you really need to have a sure footing. There are two places where you need a rope to help you. At one point you go up about 2.5m.

Here you can see very clearly what can grow in this climate as long as there is enough water.

The Barranco is called “de Arure”. The gorge stretches up to there, although hikers have to stop at the waterfall.

It's wonderful to splash around under the waterfall and you can also find a place to have a picnic.

When is the best time to visit the waterfalls in La Gomera?

La Gomera's waterfalls, particularly those in the humid laurisilva forests like El Cedro, maintain their flow year-round due to the constant humidity brought by trade winds. While they are beautiful at any time, visiting during the cooler months (autumn to spring) can be more comfortable for hiking. Even on hot days, the shaded paths to waterfalls like Arure Waterfall offer a refreshing experience.

Are there family-friendly waterfall hikes in La Gomera?

For instance, the Waterfall Near Hermigua is categorized as family-friendly and offers a beautiful place with a small waterfall and resting areas. Always check the specific trail difficulty before heading out with children.

How difficult are the trails to the waterfalls?

The difficulty varies significantly. Trails to waterfalls like Arure Waterfall can be intermediate, following watercourses. However, routes like the Waterfall in Barranco de Arure or the Waterfall Trail are often challenging, requiring sure footing, balancing over rocks and trunks, and sometimes even ropes for assistance. Sturdy, waterproof shoes are highly recommended for these adventurous routes.

What natural features can I expect to see on a waterfall hike?

You'll encounter diverse landscapes, from the unique volcanic terrain to ancient laurisilva forests, especially within Garajonay National Park. Given the varied terrain and potential for wet conditions, sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes are essential. Layers of clothing are advisable as temperatures can change, especially when moving between shaded forests and open areas. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection. Can I bring my dog on waterfall hikes in La Gomera?

While La Gomera is generally dog-friendly for outdoor activities, specific regulations may apply within Garajonay National Park or on certain protected trails.
