November 15, 2025, Renjo La Pass

Ascent between heaven and earth: the Renjo La Pass 🙏 It's one of the three highest passes in the Himalayas at 5360m. We started the ascent on November 13th, 2025, at 5:00 AM, so we weren't walking up through mud, but rather on frozen ice. Due to the amount of snow, we couldn't take the secured route, but instead had to take the direct path up, which was quite strenuous. Finally at the top 🔝 Renjo La greets you not with triumph, but with awe. Lohtse, Makalu, Nupste, Everest—the giants have once again put on a beautiful display and stand still. What a sight! Namaste 🙏 Fanjo

Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,100 meters, the Dochula Pass is one of Bhutan's most scenic and significant mountain passes. Located on the road between Thimphu and Punakha, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas, particularly on clear winter mornings when the snow-capped peaks create a stunning backdrop. One of the Dochula Pass's most prominent landmarks is the Druk Wangyal Chortens – a group of 108 memorial stupas erected under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, to honor the Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in the 2003 anti-insurgency operation. Nearby is the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple), built in 2008, a memorial to Bhutan's beloved fourth king and the armed forces, blending contemporary art with traditional Bhutanese architecture. It's very, very strenuous to hike up there, especially because of the cold, the thin air, and the altitude. But the view is worth it 🤩.

The highest point of the Annapurna Circuit and also the highest point that can be reached without climbing and without spending a lot of money. We were traveling without a porter or guide. It was a unique experience to cross the pass under our own steam and without assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some of the most challenging mountain passes in the Himalaya?

The Himalaya offers numerous challenging passes for experienced trekkers. Thorung La Pass (5,416m) on the Annapurna Circuit is known for its significant altitude gain and need for acclimatization. In the Everest region, Cho La Pass (5,420m) involves navigating loose boulders and scree, while Kongma La Pass (5,535m) is the highest of the three passes in the Khumbu region, often requiring balancing on loose stones and snow. For extreme high-altitude exploration, Sherpani Col (6,145m) is one of Nepal's highest trekking points, offering a remote adventure.

Which mountain passes offer the best views of Mount Everest?

For unparalleled views of Mount Everest, Renjo La Pass (5,345m) is an excellent choice. Many trekkers consider its vistas to surpass even those from Kala Patthar. From Kongma La Pass, you can also see two 8,000-meter peaks, Lhotse and Makalu, which are part of the Everest massif.

Are there any motorable mountain passes in the Indian Himalayas?

Yes, the Indian Himalayas feature several high motorable passes. Umling La Pass (5,799m) in Ladakh is recognized as the world's highest motorable road, offering an extraordinary driving or cycling challenge. Khardung La (5,359m) near Leh is another classic destination for road trippers, providing access to the Shyok and Nubra valleys. Chang La (5,360m) serves as the gateway to the famous Pangong Lake, and Rohtang Pass (3,979m) in Himachal Pradesh connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys.

What is the best time of year to visit mountain passes in the Himalaya?

The best time to visit mountain passes in the Himalaya generally depends on the specific pass and region. For high-altitude trekking passes in Nepal, spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer stable weather, clear skies, and moderate temperatures. For motorable passes in the Indian Himalayas like Rohtang Pass, the season typically runs from May to October, as heavy snowfall closes them during winter.

What kind of natural attractions can I expect to see near Himalayan passes?

Near Himalayan passes, you can expect to encounter breathtaking natural attractions. These include panoramic views of entire mountain ranges like the Annapurna range from Thorung La Pass, dramatic vistas of peaks like Ama Dablam from Cho La Pass, and the majestic Manaslu and Ratna from Larkya La Pass. You'll also find beautiful blue lakes, green valleys, and glaciers, such as the Khumbu glacier near Kongma La Pass.

Are there any historical or culturally significant mountain passes in the Himalaya?

Yes, several passes hold significant historical and cultural importance. Nathu La (4,310m) in East Sikkim was historically part of the ancient Silk Route and serves as an important trading border post between India and China. Khardung La also has historical significance as part of ancient trade routes. Additionally, passes like Thorung La have long been used to connect remote villages and regions, facilitating trade and cultural exchange.

What outdoor activities can I do near mountain passes in the Himalaya?

The Himalaya region offers a wide range of outdoor activities near its mountain passes. You can find numerous opportunities for hiking, from challenging multi-day treks to easier day hikes. Mountain biking is also popular, especially on motorable passes and dedicated trails. For those who enjoy running, there are various running trails available. During open seasons, some passes like Rohtang Pass also offer snow sports.

Do I need permits to trek through Himalayan passes?

Yes, for many trekking passes in the Himalaya, especially in Nepal's popular regions like Annapurna and Everest, permits are required. These typically include national park entry permits and sometimes additional permits like the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card. It's advisable to check the specific requirements for each pass or trekking region before your trip, as regulations can vary and change.

What facilities are available near high-altitude passes?

Facilities near high-altitude passes can be basic but are often sufficient for trekkers. For instance, Thorung La Pass even has a small tea shop at the summit. Along popular trekking routes, you'll find teahouses and lodges in villages leading up to the passes, offering accommodation and meals. However, facilities become scarcer and more rudimentary the closer you get to the highest points, so it's essential to be self-sufficient for parts of the journey.

Which mountain passes are considered 'gateways' to specific regions?

Several mountain passes serve as crucial gateways to distinct regions. Thorung La Pass connects the Manang area to Mustang in Nepal. In India, Khardung La provides access to the Shyok and Nubra valleys in Ladakh, while Chang La is the gateway to Pangong Lake. Bara-lacha La is considered the 'Gateway to Ladakh,' connecting Lahaul in Himachal Pradesh to Leh. Zoji La is a vital road link between Srinagar and Leh.

What makes Larkya La Pass a unique destination?

Larkya La Pass (5,135m), located in Nepal's beautiful Helambu district, is renowned for offering some of the best views in the region. From its summit, you can witness Larkya Peak and Himalayan giants like Manaslu and Ratna. The ascent is along a windy and rocky trail, and the descent passes through beautiful frozen lakes and deserted villages, providing a unique blend of challenging terrain and stunning scenery.

What is the significance of the Everest Memorials at Thukla Pass?

The Everest Memorials at Thukla Pass serve as a poignant tribute to mountaineers who have lost their lives on Mount Everest and other peaks in the region. Located after climbing the pass, this site offers not only a magnificent view of the valley but also a place for reflection. Friends and relatives of the deceased have built memorials, often using materials from the barren landscape, making it a deeply moving and historically significant stop on the Everest Base Camp trek.
