The outcrop is Traprain Law, the original ‘capital’ of the Votadini - the Celtic kingdom that dominated this part of Scotland around the time of the Romans. A bit later they got on their bikes and shifted to a bigger outcrop to the west. These days we call their new capital Edinburgh.

When I’ve ridden it, it’s been quiet. The scenery is beautiful - if you can take your eyes off a narrow road! 🤣 Perhaps best of all it’s not so much challenging as great fun to ride, whatever speed you want to ride.

Nice bit of off-road to the mill. You will however need to lift your bike up approx 5 steps at the river bridge.

Please be aware that the castle is no longer accessible to the public due to unsafe masonry. It has actually been sold to a private owner and it’s therefore unlikely to reopen in the foreseeable future. It is still a fine building to view from the outside, particularly from the river bank opposite.
