On May 3, 1153, Duke Ratibor I of Pomerania and Bishop Adalbert of Pomerania/Cammin founded the monastery as a Benedictine abbey. The occasion was in memory of Ratibor's brother, Wartislaw I, the first Christian Duke of Pomerania. Wartislaw was killed near Stolpe an der Peene in the 1120s/30s (dates vary between 1134/36 and 1147/48) – according to tradition, by a pagan Lutician. He was buried there, and a site for a church, and then the monastery, was created there.
