Sterkrader Tor is a popular shopping center in the Sterkrade district of Oberhausen. Opened in 2007 on the site of the former Gutehoffnungshütte steelworks, it combines modern architecture with a touch of industrial history – two half-flywheels in front of the entrance are a reminder of this. Across approximately 22,000 square meters, you'll find around 28 stores, including well-known names such as Aldi, C&A, dm, Edeka, DocMorris, and Takko. Even those with a small appetite are catered for: from bakeries to fast-food chains, you'll find everything. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and parking is free for up to two hours. A special bonus: A flea market is regularly held on the premises – a real highlight for bargain hunters and collectors.

Sterkrade's city center in Oberhausen is a vibrant hub with a charming blend of tradition and modernity. It offers not only numerous shopping opportunities – for example, at the Sterkrader Tor shopping center – but also regular events such as the popular Sterkrade weekly market, which takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays and offers regional products and cozy cafés. A special highlight is the traditional Corpus Christi Fair, which was once considered the largest street fair in Europe. Historically, the area is closely linked to the former Sterkrade Monastery and the industrial history surrounding the Gutehoffnungshütte (Good Hope Ironworks). Source: KI

The Sterkrade colliery was one of six de Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH) collieries in the Oberhausen urban area. Coal was mined here between 1904 and 1933. Afterwards it was the external shaft facility of the Osterfeld colliery and was only used for cable travel, weather control and material transport. Forced labor at the GHH In the German Empire and the territories it annexed, a total of around 13 million people had to do forced labor. In 1944, around 11,000 civilian workers and prisoners of war were deployed at GHH-Oberhausen AG alone. (Small excerpt from the memorial plaque)
