The inhabitants of Reek must have been quite surprised on August 9, 1639. Their quiet village was suddenly surrounded by soldiers. Prince Frederik Hendrik and his army had set up their camp there for the night. In 1639, Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik undertook a campaign with his army from Zeeuws-Vlaanderen to Reberk (Rheinberg) in Germany. From there, the prince hoped to conquer the city of Gelder from the Spanish. One of his companions, cartographer Balthasar Floriszoon van Berkenrode, accompanied the expedition. He kept a record of every place where the army spent the night. Thanks to him, we still know the precise location of the camp in Reek today. Today, there is no trace left of the soldiers who once stayed here. However, in good weather, you can enjoy a nice walk while the children romp around and imagine themselves in the seventeenth century. Near the campsite, you will also find the Reekse mill with its (still) rotating sails. Be sure to combine the two during a visit.

A wayside cross here in the Schaijksestraat and a hail cross in the Heitmorgen. Pastor Smits performed the solemn consecration of these crucifixes in 1931. A photo was taken of that event that was printed on a special postcard. The Harmonie van Grave came to enhance the ceremony. The pastor also came up with the chronicum on the pedestal: PII aCCeDaMus Cr VCifiXo In VIa. This means: βLet us approach the crucified one on the way with devoutnessβ. The year is incorporated in the capital letters in Latin characters.

After all the gravel paths, this is an excellent place to stop. Far enough from the road and trail to relax for a while.
