The Pingelhus (also Schuitenhäuschen)[1] is located in the center of the East Frisian district town of Aurich. It is considered one of the city's landmarks. The building once stood directly on the old harbor of the town. From there, the inland vessels called "Schuiten" departed in the direction of Emden. The harbor master announced their departure by ringing a bell in the building's steeple, which is why it became known in East Frisia as the Pingelhus (East Frisian Platt: "pingeln" = to ring).[3] The current ground floor was formerly the first floor. The storage room below was filled in along with the old harbor in 1934. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pingelhus
