The 16 and 18-year-old brothers Rolf and Ehme de Jonge from Bernuthsfeld came across a corpse while digging peat on May 24, 1907. For fear of being involved in a murder case, they reburied the corpse on a neighboring plot several hundred meters away. News of the discovery by the two youths also reached a responsible police officer. He reported the matter to the Aurich district court, which commissioned the police to investigate. The police officer had the de Jonge brothers show him the new burial site, which was then uncovered. Since the clothing of the corpse did not appear to be contemporary, the assumption was that it was not a current case. Thereupon, the archivist of the Aurich State Archives, Franz Wachter, was consulted, who examined the find in detail and, in addition to the skeleton, recovered further hair, items of clothing, a knife sheath, and a wooden branch. The Man of Bernuthsfeld is a bog body from the late 7th or early 8th century, found in 1907 in the Hogehahn bog near Tannenhausen, now a district of the town of Aurich in the Aurich district. A special feature of this archaeological find is the man's exceptionally well-preserved woolen clothing. In more recent publications, the Man of Bernuthsfeld is also referred to as Bernie. The find site is also located in an extensive high bog complex, where the Ewige Meer is situated about 2 km away. Over time, various archaeological finds have been made in the area, such as the plank path in Meerhusener Moor or the plough of Walle in the original expansion area of the bog. The closer find site is the Hogehahn bog, part of the Meerhuser Moor not far from the settlement of Bernuthsfeld, consisting of a few farmsteads, north of Tannenhausen.
