The campsite, often known as Neu-Helgoland or Campingplatz am Hammehafen, is located directly on the Hamme river near Worpswede. The River Hamme One can assume that without the river Hamme, the development of Worpswede and the Teufelsmoor as we know them today would not have happened. The Hamme runs through part of the extensive moorland landscape, which formed over a period of approx. 10,000 years in a shallow lake after the last ice age. Until the construction of the lock in Ritterhude in 1876, the water could flow unhindered into parts of the moorland landscape via the Weser and its tributaries. The construction of a lock at an early stage clearly shows the importance of the Hamme. As early as around 1750, the Teufelsmoor was planned to be drained. Some canals were created, which were increasingly used as transport routes with growing economic importance. The Hamme is 48 km long.
