Hubrecht van Vianen founded a chapel in the 13th century. This falls under the mother church in Hagestein and is growing rapidly. In 1345 it became a parish church and received marriage and burial rights. However, an annual amount of money had to be paid to the church in Hagestein for this. In the 14th century, the chapel was replaced by a single-aisled church. In connection with a feud between Vianen and Hagestein, the bishop of Utrecht decided in 1433 to split the two churches. In the middle of the 15th century the church was replaced by a three-aisled Gothic hall church, which is equal in area to the current church (including the tower it is 77.5 meters long, 43 meters wide and 41 meters high). Because the church also contains the family grave of the lords of Vianen, it had to match the distinguished status of the Brederodes in terms of size and appearance.
