The story behind this simple memorial cross: On Saturday, October ninth, 1943, around half past twelve in the afternoon, a burning combat aircraft flew from the direction of Zelzate. It made a turn above Koewacht and then flew over Kapellestraat back to the south. The pilot apparently wanted to make an emergency landing. The aircraft was flying low and had to try to get rid of its dangerous cargo. It released two bombs which damaged the aircraft by their explosion. Two other bombs did not explode because the aircraft was flying at too low an altitude. The aircraft crashed into a side road of Kapellestraat ("den Diepen Wegel"). Due to the fall, the aircraft disintegrated and burned out completely. Only after decades of research could further details about the crew be collected. The victims were Court and Sands of the 487th New Zealand Squadron (RAF). Edgar William Peter Court was a flight lieutenant, with service number 40993. He was 28 years old. This Chapel of Saint Barbara is also the third of seven chapels on a pilgrimage route that runs from the church of Klein-Sinaai via Kasteelstraat, Abelendreef and then along Pannenhuisstraat to the chapel of Our Lady of Consolation in Pannenhuisstraat. They represent the 7 sorrows of Mary. This was all made possible by the pastoral zeal of pastor Muyshondt between 1872-1876 and by donations from loyal parishioners. According to legend, around 1175, Boudewijn van Bocla had a vision in Pannenhuisstraat of Our Lady asking him to build a monastery here. The former station of Klein-Sinaai was located on line 77, which ran from Sint-Gillis-Waas to Zelzate. In 1974, the Kemzeke - Moerbeke section was dismantled and shortly thereafter converted into an asphalted walking and cycling path, an early example, as recreational cycling was still relatively rare around 1980. The wooden arch bridge over the Stekense Vaart, named after Frans Coppens, was receiver-clerk in the municipality of Sinaai for almost a quarter of a century. He played an important role in "de Groote Watering van Sinay", the name given to the project launched by the Boerenbond in 1926. This project was initiated after repeated floods and aimed to make the polders 'dry'. The construction of the pumping station near Hondsnest was one of the first achievements within this project. During the Second World War, the unemployed were employed to clean or widen ditches.
