Chapel built during the 18th century. On the Campanino promontory, bordering Sestri Levante, there already existed a chapel with an adjoining hospice dedicated to San Leonardo dei Francesi; this building was owned by the Knights of Malta until 1665, when it passed into the hands of Leonardo Frugoni, who also took care of the adjoining lands. The lands, granted on emphyteusis to Frugoni, then passed to the Cambiaso family and subsequently to the Negrotto marquises. The original chapel, after being used as a shelter for animals, finally fell into ruin. The current building was built during the 18th century together with the nearby palace of the Cambiaso family and then of the Negrotto marquises. An epigraph relating to the indulgences granted by Pope Innocent XI in perpetuity (1689) was recovered from the ancient chapel and walled up here. Inside, near the marble altar, there is an altarpiece by the painter Bartolomeo Biscaino depicting the Madonna del Carmine with Child, Saint Erasmus Bishop, and Saint Leonard of Limoges. Piazza Mazzini is also known as Cabbage Square because the fruit and vegetable market is held there every morning. The square was created during the construction of the citadel, when houses were destroyed to gain access to the building. The citadel was a fortified palace used to defend the city. In 1850, the Gramatiga shipping agency was located at numbers 3 and 4, which helped many Chiavari residents emigrate to America. The monument in the center of the square is of Giuseppe Mazzini. The sculpture was made by Augusto Rivalta in 1886 and placed in the square two years later for political reasons. The statue is made of bronze and was recently restored.
