The Schrumpfbachtal valley is a very beautiful forest. Today, however, there were uprooted or broken trees on this section. We were able to climb under the first one, but that wasn't possible with the other three! Here we went up the slope on the left in the forest, which is, of course, quite slippery. However, there was no obvious detour for us.

Since the figure depicted here is holding a rifle, I would not identify it as a "Shepherd Boy" (as the title of this highlight is), but rather consider it a classic depiction of a hunter.

The Moselle Valley offers a vast network of trails, with over 3,400 easy routes and more than 2,400 moderate routes that are suitable for families. This ensures a wide variety of options for all ages and fitness levels.
Family-friendly hikes in the Moselle Valley often feature a mix of vineyard paths, forest trails, and riverside promenades. You'll encounter gentle slopes, but also some steeper sections, especially on trails leading to viewpoints or castles. Many paths are well-maintained, but sturdy footwear is always recommended.
Yes, the Moselle Valley is known for its excellent circular routes, often called 'Dream Loops' (Traumpfade and Traumschleifen). An example is the Ehrbach Gorge dream loop, which offers a scenic circular experience through forests and along a gorge, perfect for a family day out.
The region is rich in natural beauty and historical sites. You can explore deep gorges like the Ehrbach Gorge, discover impressive rock formations, and enjoy stunning views of the Moselle River. Many trails also lead past charming villages and historic castles. For panoramic views, consider routes that pass by highlights like the Uhuley Viewpoint or the Rabenlay Viewpoint and Shelter.
While many trails in the Moselle Valley feature varied terrain, some sections along the river or through flatter vineyards are suitable for pushchairs. For toddlers, look for shorter, well-paved paths or those with minimal elevation gain. Always check the specific route details on komoot for terrain information before heading out.
Generally, dogs are welcome on most hiking trails in the Moselle Valley. However, it's always advisable to keep them on a leash, especially in nature reserves, near livestock, or in crowded areas. Remember to bring water for your dog and clean up after them.
Spring (April-May) offers blooming landscapes and pleasant temperatures, while autumn (September-October) provides stunning vineyard colors and comfortable hiking weather. Summer can be warm, so early morning or late afternoon hikes are best. Winter hiking is also possible, especially on lower-lying trails, but some services might be limited.
Absolutely! The Moselle Valley is famous for its castles. The Traumpfad: Eltzer Burgpanorama is a prime example, offering breathtaking views of the iconic Eltz Castle. Many other trails wind past ruins or offer glimpses of historic fortifications perched on hilltops.
Many trailheads in the Moselle Valley have designated parking areas, especially for popular routes and 'Dream Loops'. The region also has a good public transport network, including buses and trains, which can be used to reach various starting points or to connect different sections of trails. Checking local transport schedules in advance is recommended.
The Moselle Valley is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.56 stars. Reviewers often praise the diverse landscapes, the well-maintained paths, and the combination of natural beauty with historical attractions. Many highlight the stunning views and the opportunity to experience the region's unique wine culture.
While popular routes can get busy, especially on weekends, you can often find quieter alternatives by exploring the numerous 'Dream Loops' or partner trails that branch off the main Moselsteig. Routes like the Waldschluchtenweg – Traumpfad offer beautiful scenery and can be less frequented than the most famous paths.
Many villages along the Moselle offer cafes, restaurants, and traditional 'Straußwirtschaften' (seasonal wine taverns) where families can stop for a break and refreshments. Some towns also feature playgrounds, particularly near riverside promenades or parks, making them ideal spots for kids to unwind after a hike.
