In 1900, the cattle scale and its associated weigh house began operating on Eching's then main street. For decades, the open-air weighbridge was used to weigh entire wagonloads of potatoes, hay, straw, grain, or coal. There was also a separate cattle scale for pigs, bulls, oxen, and calves. At the end of the 1960s, the scale was nearing the end of its service life, but its use was significantly extended, primarily due to the introduction of "loose fertilizer," which was sold at the Eching Raiffeisen warehouse. The fertilizer was not packaged but sold only in bulk via the municipal scale. It was finally decommissioned in 1990; a further repair was apparently not feasible. It's such a simple idea, really well and memorably implemented. This bench is just one example of several others in Eching that invite people to linger and, above all, to socialize.
