The Östra Kalven trail is steep in parts but easy to follow, and leads you up onto the open mountain heath. At the top you’ll find a mast and a small locked shelter, along with a stunning view over the area, wide and open across the Sälenfjällen mountains. The terrain is quiet and bare, with heather, lichen and small pools scattered around.

Follow the narrow forest path uphill and you’ll reach a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the lake below. From here you can really appreciate the scale of this peaceful forest lake, which stretches out for almost 7 square kilometres and reaches depths of up to 48 metres. Sitting about 240 metres above sea level and surrounded by quiet woods, it’s a great place to pause and take in the view.

An atmospheric shelter/rest hut. In good weather, take advantage of the outdoor benches around a fireplace. Next to the hut a small stream flows providing a water source. There is also an emergency telephone in the hut.
