The path to the park entrance starts at the "Caldeira Velha" parking lot. A short flight of stairs leads to the entrance. From the parking lot, you'll also have another fantastic view of the island to the north.

Absolutely overrated – the small park, including the swimming area, is nice, but far too expensive for its size. The pools are very small and too crowded for my taste. If you want to soak in hot water, I recommend a visit to Terra Nostra Park.

A wonderful park, but very small. Admission is okay at €3.00 per adult. There are also thermal pools where you can swim, but they are very small. It's also very crowded. To swim there, you have to pay an additional €7.00. I don't recommend it for swimming.

Families can explore diverse landscapes, including the stunning volcanic caldera and the crystal-clear Lagoa do Fogo itself. Many trails pass through lush endemic flora, such as Azorean Blueberry and Laurel, and offer panoramic viewpoints. Some routes also lead to unique features like the pumice beach along the lake's margins or nearby geothermal areas.
Yes, there are several easy circular routes. For example, the Salto do Cabrito Boardwalk – Cabrito Waterfall loop from Azores is an easy option that takes you through beautiful scenery, including a waterfall. Another very short and easy option is the Hiking loop from Ribeira Grande (Conceição), perfect for a quick stroll.
While many trails in the Azores are dog-friendly, it's always best to check specific regulations for the Reserva Natural da Lagoa do Fogo, as it is a protected area. Generally, dogs should be kept on a leash to protect local wildlife and flora.
Absolutely! The area is known for its beautiful waterfalls. The Salto do Cabrito Boardwalk – Cabrito Waterfall loop from Azores is an excellent choice for families looking to experience a waterfall up close. Another route, the Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande e Salto do Cabrito circular route, also includes waterfall views.
The spring and summer months (April to September) generally offer the most pleasant weather for family hiking, with warmer temperatures and less rain. However, the weather on São Miguel can be unpredictable, so it's always wise to check the forecast before heading out, regardless of the season. Visiting outside of peak tourist season can also offer a more tranquil experience.
While many trails involve uneven terrain, some shorter, easier paths might be manageable for families with toddlers in carriers. Trails suitable for strollers are limited due to the natural, often rugged volcanic terrain. For very young children, consider the shortest easy loops or stick to paved sections near viewpoints.
Parking is typically available at the start points of popular trails and near major viewpoints like Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo. However, spaces can fill up quickly during peak times, especially for trails leading down to the lake. Arriving early in the morning is recommended.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.3 stars from over 4,200 ratings. Reviewers often praise the breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and coastline, the lush, unique vegetation, and the sense of adventure in exploring a volcanic landscape. The well-maintained paths and clear signage are also frequently highlighted.
Yes, many trails offer access to stunning viewpoints. Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo and Pico da Barrosa Viewpoint are particularly renowned for their breathtaking vistas of the crater lake and the surrounding volcanic scenery. Some routes, like the Gorge Trail in São Miguel, also provide scenic overlooks of the island's interior.
Public transport options to the immediate vicinity of Lagoa do Fogo are limited. While there are bus services on São Miguel, reaching specific trailheads often requires a car or a taxi. Some tour operators offer guided trips that include transport to popular hiking spots.
Directly at the trailheads within the Reserva Natural da Lagoa do Fogo, amenities like cafes are scarce due to its protected status. However, you can find cafes and restaurants in nearby towns such as Ribeira Grande or Vila Franca do Campo, which are a short drive away. It's advisable to pack snacks and drinks for your hike.
