May 2, 2026, Memorial to Firefighting Pilot Touristikis Epistrofi

The monument is dedicated to the Greek firefighter pilot Stergios Kotoulas (Στεργίου Κωτούλα). It is located near the village of Frangata. The monument marks the spot where Kotoulas died in a fatal accident on August 27, 2009, while fighting wildfires with his PZL M18 Dromader firefighting aircraft. Date: August 27, 2009. Colonel Stergios Kotoulas, 55, was an experienced pilot with thousands of flight hours. The aircraft crashed just nine minutes after taking off from Kefalonia Airport while attempting to combat a wildfire on the island.

Antisamos Beach on the island of Kefalonia is spectacular. It is known for its distinctive white pebbles, emerald-green water, and the lushly forested hills that surround the bay. The beach gained worldwide fame as one of the main filming locations for the Hollywood movie "Corelli's Mandolin". The water is exceptionally clear and ideal for snorkeling, as many fish can be seen even in the shallow areas. However, note that the seabed drops steeply after about 5 meters. It is an organized beach with several beach bars.

April 26, 2026, Katelios Beach

The long sandy beach is known for its very shallow, calm water, making it particularly family-friendly. A part of the beach is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, which can often be used free of charge if you consume something in one of the adjacent tavernas. The area is an important breeding ground for the Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). During nesting season, sections of the beach may be closed to protect the eggs. The place is relatively quiet and relaxed compared to other tourist centers, ideal for those seeking relaxation.

April 23, 2026, Zervati Cave

The Zervati Cave (also known as the "Blue Cave") is an impressive natural monument in the village of Karavomylos, just about 2 km from Sami. Access to the cave is usually free. Unlike the more famous Melissani Cave, no official entrance fee is charged here. However, access may occasionally be closed or secured by a fence due to the risk of falling rocks.

(2) After a four-month siege, Sami was conquered in 188 BC by the Romans under Marcus Fulvius Nobilior. Visitors can see ruins from various epochs, including Hellenistic citadels, Roman baths, and the Agioi Fanentes monastery, built within the ancient walls. The site offers spectacular panoramic views of the port of Sami, the bay of Antisamos, and the neighboring island of Ithaka.

The acropolis of ancient Sami is an important archaeological site on Mount Lapitha, above the present-day port town of Sami. Sami was one of the four autonomous city-states (Tetrapolis) of Kefalonia and was mentioned in Homer's epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. The acropolis was a powerful fortress with massive city walls that served to protect the population. The walls exhibit various building styles, including the impressive cyclopean masonry.

The shop in Sami's city center, near the promenade, is a typical local store offering a variety of traditional products: For example, Cretan mountain tea or dittany, traditional Greek herbs such as oregano and thyme, high-quality olive oil from the region, local honey, garlic, and other specialties.
