An authentic and unmissable refuge where we stopped during our mountain bike crossing of the Assietta with my friend. Two incredible days filled with the beauty of the surroundings and exceptional autumn light. One night at 2500m altitude at the Casa Assietta refuge, where we were welcomed like royalty by Roberto! A good night's sleep under the covers after the host had prepared an excellent dinner for us! Thank you, Roberto!

To eat at the refuge, it's best to book to be sure of a first course of polenta ;-)

I'd been dreaming of being there for a long time, and I finally made it. It's a simply wonderful place. Words needn't be written. I climbed to the pass on its eastern slope, the one that starts from Pian dell'Alpe, and previously climbed Colle delle Finestre from Susa. Combining the two sections, I can assure you it's one of the toughest climbs I've ever done, but also one of the most beautiful. The section from Pian dell'Alpe to Colle della Assietta is divided into three parts: the first 4 kilometers of a steady climb at 6-7% gradient, the 2-kilometer intermediate rest stop, and the final 4 kilometers with steeper gradients and a worse track condition. I wholeheartedly invite you all to enjoy this wonderful place.

Rest stop before tackling the final 8 km climb to Sestriere (2035 m). Eat some protein and remember to bring water. The climb is always exposed to the sun. The average gradient is 6%.

Usseaux is nestled in the Cottian Alps, offering stunning natural landscapes within the Orsiera-Rocciavrè and Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Natural Parks. The region provides a diverse network of routes, many on quiet roads or gravel paths, allowing cyclists to immerse themselves in nature and history without vehicle interference. The area is also known for its picturesque villages and historical fortifications.
Absolutely. Many routes offer breathtaking views of the alpine environment. A notable natural gem is Lake Laux, a spectacular mountain lake surrounded by forests. Other natural highlights include Pian dell'Alpe and various other lakes like Icehouse Lake. The routes often traverse dense forests, majestic mountains, and verdant pastures.
Usseaux itself is known as the 'Painted Village' with over 40 murals on its 18th-century buildings. You can also find ancient stone buildings like the Parish Church of St. Peter, a community oven, and a mill. Nearby, impressive historical fortifications such as Forte Serre Marie and the Fort of Fenestrelle offer fascinating stops. Consider the Forti Serre Marie e delle Valli – loop tour for a route that passes by these historical structures.
Yes, there are circular routes designed for touring cyclists seeking no-traffic experiences. An example is the challenging Forti Serre Marie e delle Valli – loop tour, which is 27.4 km long with over 1000 meters of elevation gain.
While many routes are challenging, there are a few easier options available. For those seeking a more moderate experience, routes like Rifugio Troncea da Pragelato offer a good balance, with a distance of about 19 km and around 400 meters of elevation gain, making them more accessible for less experienced riders or families with older children.
The best time to enjoy touring cycling in Usseaux is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the alpine passes are generally clear of snow, and the weather is more favorable for cycling. Summer offers warmer temperatures, while spring and autumn provide cooler rides and vibrant foliage.
Yes, particularly in the villages and at mountain huts. You can find several huts in the area, such as Assietta Refuge, Mulino di Laval Mountain Hut, and Amprimo Mountain Hut, which often provide food, drink, and sometimes overnight stays. It's always advisable to check opening times in advance, especially outside peak season.
While specific routes aren't explicitly marked as 'dog-friendly,' many of the natural park areas and quiet gravel roads are suitable for cycling with well-behaved dogs, provided they are on a leash or under strict voice control. Always ensure your dog is fit enough for the distance and elevation, and carry enough water for both of you. Be mindful of local regulations within the natural parks regarding pets.
Challenging routes often feature significant climbs and descents on both paved and unpaved surfaces. For example, the Assietta Ridge Road is a renowned military road and mountain pass at 2,472 meters, largely consisting of a dirt road with excellent surfaces and broad vistas. These routes require good climbing training and sometimes mountain biking skills for downhill sections.
Usseaux and nearby villages like Pragelato offer parking facilities. It's best to look for designated parking areas within the villages or at the trailheads of popular routes. Given the focus on no-traffic routes, many starting points are designed to be accessible by car before you embark on your ride.
