The creek area of Saleghem is more than the sum of its parts. The nature reserve consists of the Grote Saleghemgeul on one side, and the Sint-Jakobsgat and the Kieldrechtse Watergang on the other. This triumvirate of water creeks then flows into the Grote Geule in Kieldrecht. Each separately is beautiful, yes. But together they are magical. The succession of gently sloping banks, grassland and hay, rare birds and colourful flowers, rustling reeds and melancholic willows: it silences a person. It inspires awe for the magic of nature. And everyone can enjoy it – even wheelchair users, because there is a special wheelchair walk around the creek lakes. This is what waasland.be writes... and there is nothing to contradict it.

The Sint-Jozefkerk of Nieuw Namen was taken into use in 1860, shortly after the founding of the village. In 1898 the church was expanded, in 1912 a new tower was built, and in 1923 the side aisles were extended. In front of the church is a bronze Sacred Heart statue from around 1920, made by P. de Roeck. source: Wikipedia

The miraculous statuette of Our Lady, which according to legend was found in 1511 under the old linden tree, is not large, barely 39 cm high. It is made of linden wood. It is beautiful and simple. Mary holds a smiling child Jesus on her right arm. The statuette is polychromed, but damaged here and there. The statuette has, as it were, a veritable wardrobe with a rich assortment of silver crowns. It was customary for the statuette to be redressed every year in May. The original statuette is no longer in the chapel of Gaverland, it is a replica. To protect it from theft and damage, the statuette is kept in the vaults of the parish church of Melsele. Another fact about the neo-Gothic altar of the Gaverland chapel: it could be purchased thanks to the proceeds of a raffle for which the church fabric paid 10 francs annually for more than 20 years. A sum of 2000 francs was won in the year 1861 and it was decided to use it for a new main altar and two side altars. The two side altars dedicated to St. Joseph and St. Catherine no longer exist, unfortunately. The plans were drawn by E.H. Clarysse and the commission was carried out by Charles Van Oembergh, a sculptor from Brussels. source: kerknet.be

When the canteen is open, everyone is welcome. A great place to socialize with the local fishermen. Don't be too strict about the dimensions or distances. These should always be interpreted with a grain of salt. It's nice to know you can come here to quench your thirst. This location also has a rich history. If you have time, take the time to delve into the past. The fishing club and the Schans Halve Maan are located in an old defensive dike. The entire southern section is a Protected Landscape. The entire dike is freely accessible to walkers and partially to cyclists.

A pleasant picnic area. Several benches invite you to relax in a historic setting. Explanation: In 1953, the fort was severely damaged by a flood, and the interior was excavated to fill sandbags. Flood victims were given permission to build temporary shelters on the vacant land. Private homes now stand on the site. The ramparts surrounding the fort have almost completely disappeared. Only a remnant remains at the bridgehead.
