Fantastic fast tracks, watch out for the pedestrians, I met several groups of foreign tourists on one occasion, all over the place and didn’t seem to care, or be aware of anyone else.

Can see the well preserved platforms from the former station which closed in 1962. Today provides convenient seating, parking, and bike access to the excellent Cole Green Way route.

Morden Hall Park is a peaceful green escape with lovely riverside paths and historic bridges. Perfect for a relaxed cycle or family ride. The paths are mostly flat, but can be narrow in places and a bit busy on weekends. Great spot to take photos.

There are 6 dedicated no-traffic gravel bike trails listed in this guide that start near or are accessible from the London Borough of Camden. These routes offer a mix of urban green spaces and connections to larger natural areas, perfect for gravel biking.
You can expect a diverse range of surfaces. Many routes utilize canal towpaths, like the Regent's Canal, which can be mixed-surface. Expansive green spaces such as Hampstead Heath offer unpaved paths and trails. Routes extending further out, like those towards Epping Forest or Lee Valley Park, feature winding forest paths and wider gravel tracks, providing a true gravel riding experience.
While the routes listed in this guide are generally longer and rated as difficult due to their distance and elevation, the Regent's Canal towpath offers sections that are relatively flat and traffic-free, making them suitable for families looking for shorter, more leisurely rides. You can explore parts of the canal that pass through Regent's Park or near Camden Market for a pleasant outing.
Many routes offer beautiful sights. You can enjoy panoramic views of London from Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath. The Regent's Canal itself is a highlight, passing by Camden Lock and Camden Market. Other natural features include the Hampstead Mixed Pond. For historical interest, Keats House is also nearby.
Yes, all the routes in this guide are designed as circular loops, ensuring you return to your starting point without needing to retrace your steps. For example, the River Lea, Epping Forest and Roding Valley loop from Stratford offers a substantial circular ride through varied landscapes.
The London Borough of Camden is well-served by public transport, including numerous Underground and Overground stations, and bus routes. This makes it convenient to reach the starting points of many trails, especially those that begin within or close to central London. For routes extending further out, check specific public transport links to their starting locations.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars from 93 ratings. Reviewers often praise the surprising amount of green space within an urban setting, the traffic-free nature of canal paths, and the ability to connect to larger, more natural areas like Epping Forest for extended gravel adventures.
While many routes listed are longer, the concept of 'pavement to pathways' gravel riding is very relevant here. Beginners can start with shorter, traffic-free sections of the Regent's Canal towpath or explore the less formal paths within Regent's Park or Hampstead Heath. These areas provide a gentle introduction to mixed-surface riding without significant traffic concerns.
For more advanced riders seeking longer, traffic-free challenges, routes like the Strawberry Hill Pond – Buck's Alley Woodland Lane loop from Crouch Hill or the Wandle Trail, Surrey Hills and the Thames Path loop from Clapham Junction offer significant distances and elevation gains, taking you through diverse landscapes away from urban traffic.
Beyond the well-known Regent's Canal and Hampstead Heath, exploring the connections to areas like the Lea Valley or even Epping Forest can reveal less-trafficked gravel paths. The Camden Peripherique, while not entirely off-road, is a 16-mile route that aims to maximize quiet streets and green links around the borough, offering a different kind of 'hidden' urban gravel experience.
Spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant conditions with milder temperatures and beautiful scenery. Summer can be great, but paths might be busier. Winter riding is possible, but be prepared for potentially muddy conditions on unpaved sections, especially on Hampstead Heath or in Epping Forest. Always check local weather and trail conditions before heading out.
