This fireplace, located in Hampshire, England, was part of a hutted camp for Portuguese soldiers who helped the Canadian Forestry Corps produce timber for the war effort. The fireplace was retained by the Forestry Commission as a memorial, acknowledging the Portuguese Government's financial help with its renovation. The fireplace is all that remains of the cookhouse from the camp. Other remnants of WWI and WWII sawmills are also nearby.

Don't actually lean your bike up against the black post box. It is a monument not a bike post. There are plenty of trees nearby!

Beech Bed Inclosure's history reflects a broader policy of inclosure in the New Forest aimed at timber production, with its specific establishment in 1829 marking a period of significant land management changes in the area. Over time, this particular inclosure has evolved into a sublime and mature woodland with super-tall beech trees that contribute to the New Forest's ecological and landscape value.

The black post box is a Victorian relic and hidden in plain sight in the edge of the woods on the right as you enter the car park from the road. It even has a little sign in front of it now I notice. This is at the 15km or half way mark on the ride and conveniently next to the Royal Oak pub. Which is well worth a visit. Real forest pub with a lovely large garden and welcomes cyclists with a dedicated cycle park.

Also known as Canadian memorial. This is the site of a world war 1 camp. It was used by a portuguese army regiment and Canadian Sawyers and lumberjacks to manufacture equipment from the wood in the forest for the war effort.

In Holidays Hill Inclosure, this spot encourages you to "Listen" - to the trees, that is. Slow your life down to a crawl and listen to the language of nature. A lovely idea, this.
