This is a well equipped park with sports fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, a splash pad, and restrooms. The Union Pacific Rail Trail runs through the park as well, so it's well connected to the rest of the city.

Located south of the Las Vegas Valley, Black Mountain is one of the more prominent peaks in the McCullough Range. There are many transmission towers from Las Vegas area television and radio stations on Black Mountain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dogs allowed on the trails in the McCullough Range?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails in the McCullough Range, but they must be kept on a leash. The terrain can be rugged and exposed with little shade, so ensure you bring plenty of water for both yourself and your furry companion. Also, be mindful of the local wildlife.

What is the best time of year to hike in the McCullough Range?

The best seasons for hiking are fall, winter, and spring. Temperatures are much more pleasant for outdoor activities during these months. Summer can be extremely hot, making hiking dangerous, especially during the middle of the day. If you do hike in warmer months, start very early in the morning and carry extra water.

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes in the area?

Yes, there are several easier options suitable for families or beginners. The McCullough Hills Trailhead loop from McCullough Hills Trailhead Parking Lot is a relatively short and gentle walk. Another good choice is the McCullough Hills Trail loop from Sunridge Heights, which offers a pleasant stroll through the desert landscape without too much climbing.

Where can I see the ancient petroglyphs?

The famous petroglyphs are located in the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, specifically within the Petroglyph Management Area in the North McCullough Wilderness. This area is known for its significant collection of ancient rock art. Please remember that this is a protected cultural site; touching the petroglyphs is strictly prohibited to preserve them.

What is the terrain like in the McCullough Range?

The range has two distinct characters. The North McCullough Wilderness is defined by its volcanic origins, featuring large, rounded peaks and visible lava flows. The South McCullough Wilderness is composed of older metamorphic rock, making it feel more rugged and remote, with steep slopes and deep canyons. Trails vary from well-maintained paths to primitive routes requiring navigation skills.

Is there a good trail for trail running?

The McCullough Hills Trail system is very popular with local trail runners. For a serious challenge, the McCullough Hills Trail is a long-distance route that provides a great endurance workout. For shorter runs, there are several easier loops starting from the main trailhead.

Where is a good place to park for hiking?

A popular and well-equipped starting point is the McCullough Hills Trailhead in Henderson. It's highly regarded by local hikers and offers amenities like restrooms, picnic tables, and parking for access to several trails in the northern part of the range.

Can I go camping in the McCullough Range?

Primitive, leave-no-trace camping is permitted in some parts of the McCullough Wilderness, particularly in the more remote southern section. However, there are no developed campgrounds. The Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, which includes the northern section, is for day use only. Always check current regulations with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) before planning an overnight trip.

What do other hikers think of the trails in the McCullough Range?

The trails are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Hikers often praise the stunning desert scenery, the rewarding views from the peaks, and the sense of solitude you can find just a short distance from the city.

How should I prepare for a hike in this desert environment?

Preparation is key. Always carry more water than you think you'll need, as there are no natural water sources on the trails. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, use sun protection like a hat and sunscreen, and dress in layers. The terrain can be rocky and uneven, and weather can change, so it's best to be prepared for various conditions.

Are there any circular walks available?

Yes, there are many loop trails. For a challenging circular hike with great views, consider the Black Mountain loop. If you're looking for something more moderate, the Anthem East Trailhead – Black Mountain Trail loop is another excellent option that circles through the volcanic landscape.

What kind of wildlife might I see?

The McCullough Range is home to a variety of desert wildlife. Keep an eye out for desert bighorn sheep, especially at higher elevations. You might also spot jackrabbits, mule deer, and various lizards and birds. The area is also habitat for the protected desert tortoise, so watch your step and observe from a distance if you are lucky enough to see one.
