Tips from the Community

Lisa
November 5, 2023, North Gap Lake

A beautiful alpine lake, set into a veritable moonscape of rock dotted with trees. This starkly beautiful spot makes a good turnaround for some runners, but if you're feeling peppy and prepared for traveling through remote terrain in rapidly changing weather, you could continue farther and, for the really intrepid and well-prepared runner, even complete a loop circumnavigating Browns Peak.

November 5, 2023, Medicine Bow Peak

Medicine Bow Peak sits at 12,013 feet (3,662 m) in elevation, and the trail to reach it is entirely above treeline. That means it's exposed to the elements and the weather — so although it may be a trail runner's natural inclination to go lightly and with minimal equipment, make sure you're prepared to deal with bad weather if it happens. The US Forest Service even recommends traveling here in the morning, as weather patterns tend to be even less stable in the afternoon.

September 8, 2023, Rawah Lakes 1 and 2

Rawah Lake 1 is just north of Rawah Lake two along the Rawah Trail. These two lakes are connected by a stream, which flows through the thick forest. This is a great place to look out for wildlife and wildflowers as you hike.

September 8, 2023, Montgomery Pass

From the wide, open summit of Montgomery Pass you get fantastic views of North Park to the west, the Neota Wilderness to the south, and the Rawah Wilderness to the north. The summit of pass is also just east of the boundary between Roosevelt National Forest and Colorado State Forest State Park, where you can see the remains of a log cabin that dates from around 1900.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to hike in the Medicine Bow Mountains?

The prime hiking season is from July to September when the trails are generally free of snow and the weather is most favorable. This is also the best time to see alpine wildflowers in bloom. The popular Snowy Range Scenic Byway (Highway 130), which provides access to many high-elevation trailheads, is typically open from Memorial Day through October, weather permitting. Always check local conditions before you go, as afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer.

Are dogs allowed on the trails?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on trails within the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, but they must be kept under control at all times. Some areas, like designated wilderness areas, may have specific regulations, such as requiring dogs to be on a leash. Always pack out waste and ensure your dog does not disturb wildlife.

What are some good family-friendly hikes in the area?

For an easy and accessible walk, the Coyote Valley Trail is a great choice. It's a relatively flat, 1.2-mile (1.9 km) path that's perfect for all ages. Another excellent option is the Lost Lake from Brooklyn Lake Road trail, which offers beautiful scenery without too much effort.

I'm looking for a challenging hike. What do you recommend?

For a strenuous but rewarding day, consider the Montgomery Pass loop. This 4-mile (6.5 km) trail involves a significant elevation gain of over 1,000 feet (330 m) and rewards hikers with fantastic views in the Rawah Wilderness.

Are there any good backpacking or multi-day routes?

Yes, the Medicine Bow Mountains offer excellent backpacking opportunities. For a long and challenging adventure, the Bowen Gulch Trail to Blue Ridge Trail is a 16.2-mile (26 km) route through the Never Summer Wilderness that is ideal for an overnight trip. What kind of wildlife might I see?

The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest is home to a rich variety of wildlife. It's common to spot moose, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and yellow-bellied marmots. Keep a safe distance and never feed wild animals. Birdwatchers can also find a wide array of species throughout the different ecosystems.
