A beautiful alpine lake, set into a veritable moonscape of rock dotted with trees. This starkly beautiful spot makes a good turnaround for some runners, but if you're feeling peppy and prepared for traveling through remote terrain in rapidly changing weather, you could continue farther and, for the really intrepid and well-prepared runner, even complete a loop circumnavigating Browns Peak.

Medicine Bow Peak sits at 12,013 feet (3,662 m) in elevation, and the trail to reach it is entirely above treeline. That means it's exposed to the elements and the weather — so although it may be a trail runner's natural inclination to go lightly and with minimal equipment, make sure you're prepared to deal with bad weather if it happens. The US Forest Service even recommends traveling here in the morning, as weather patterns tend to be even less stable in the afternoon.

Medicine Bow Peak sits at 12,013 feet (3,662 m) in elevation, and the trail to reach it is entirely above treeline. Weather can change quickly and dramatically at this elevation, so even the US Forest Service recommends hiking early in the morning, as the weather can be even more variable in the afternoon.

Rawah Lake 1 is just north of Rawah Lake two along the Rawah Trail. These two lakes are connected by a stream, which flows through the thick forest. This is a great place to look out for wildlife and wildflowers as you hike.

From the wide, open summit of Montgomery Pass you get fantastic views of North Park to the west, the Neota Wilderness to the south, and the Rawah Wilderness to the north. The summit of pass is also just east of the boundary between Roosevelt National Forest and Colorado State Forest State Park, where you can see the remains of a log cabin that dates from around 1900.

The prime hiking season is from July to September when the trails are generally free of snow and the weather is most favorable. This is also the best time to see alpine wildflowers in bloom. The popular Snowy Range Scenic Byway (Highway 130), which provides access to many high-elevation trailheads, is typically open from Memorial Day through October, weather permitting. Always check local conditions before you go, as afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on trails within the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, but they must be kept under control at all times. Some areas, like designated wilderness areas, may have specific regulations, such as requiring dogs to be on a leash. Always pack out waste and ensure your dog does not disturb wildlife.
For an easy and accessible walk, the Coyote Valley Trail is a great choice. It's a relatively flat, 1.2-mile (1.9 km) path that's perfect for all ages. Another excellent option is the Lost Lake from Brooklyn Lake Road trail, which offers beautiful scenery without too much effort.

Yes, the Medicine Bow Mountains offer excellent backpacking opportunities. For a long and challenging adventure, the Bowen Gulch Trail to Blue Ridge Trail is a 16.2-mile (26 km) route through the Never Summer Wilderness that is ideal for an overnight trip. The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest is home to a rich variety of wildlife. It's common to spot moose, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and yellow-bellied marmots. Keep a safe distance and never feed wild animals. Birdwatchers can also find a wide array of species throughout the different ecosystems.
Absolutely. The Vedauwoo Recreation Area is famous for its dramatic 1.4-billion-year-old granite rock formations, known as hoodoos. While it's a world-renowned climbing spot, hikers can enjoy trails like the Turtle Rock Loop to experience this unique landscape. The name 'Vedauwoo' is derived from an Arapaho word meaning 'earth-born'.
