Boulder Butte stands at 7,355 feet above sea level east of Lake Chelan and Stehekin in the heart of the North Cascades. This remote-feeling peak is a great challenge and an excellent adventure if in Stehekin. From the top you get panoramic views that you will most likely enjoy in solitude.

Purple Pass is a high mountain pass east of Lake Chelan and Stehekin. Although the climb up to the pass is strenuous - ascending many, many switchbacks - you get great views of the lake, and in the summer there is an abundance of wildflowers lining the trail. From Purple Pass you can either summit Boulder Butte or continue to Juanita Lake, which has campsites near a small lake.

If the tiny Purple Point Campground at the north side of Stehekin is already full, there is lots of room in this idyllic forested area. It can get a little crowded during Pacific Crest Trail hiker season which is roughly mid August through mid September.

This short loop trail offers a great view over Stehekin and Lake Chelan. Take a seat at the wooden bench to take in this unique landscape at the fullest. Along the loop you will find two wooden bridges and a small hidden waterfall. Enjoy!

Nestled deep into the North Cascades National Park lies the tiny town of Stehekin. It is less than 100 miles from the Canadian border and only accessible by foot, boat or seaplane. It is eleven miles from the Pacific Crest Trail on a dirt road. Two shuttle companies run at least four times a day to get you here. Most hikers send their final resupply package to Stehekin. The small town has a friendly post office, an excellent restaurant, a small store, hotel, campground and a laundromat with showers. You should definitely stop at the bakery outside of town and get some delicious cinnamon rolls – my personal favorite. The shuttle stops there, too.

Our guide features 11 carefully selected family-friendly hiking trails around Lake Chelan, ranging from easy strolls to more moderate adventures. The wider Lake Chelan region boasts over 250 miles of maintained summer trails, offering a diverse range of options for all skill levels.
The terrain around Lake Chelan is incredibly diverse due to its glacial origins. You'll find trails traversing steep forested slopes, long lakeside paths, and even some drier, desert-like areas at the southern end. Many trails offer panoramic views of the deep blue lake and surrounding Cascade Mountains.
While many trails have varied terrain, the Imus Creek Trail is an easy option. For paved, accessible walks, the Chelan Riverwalk Park Loop Trail in downtown Chelan offers a pleasant, flat experience along the river, perfect for strollers and leisurely family strolls.
Many trails offer stunning views of Lake Chelan itself. The Imus Creek Trail Viewpoint provides a great vantage point. For a unique experience, consider a trip to Stehekin at the lake's northern end, accessible primarily by boat, which serves as a gateway to the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area.
Late spring and early summer are ideal for enjoying beautiful wildflowers, while fall offers vibrant colors. The region transforms with the seasons, providing unique beauty year-round. For most family hikes, the warmer months from late spring through early fall offer the most comfortable conditions.
Many trails in the Lake Chelan area are dog-friendly, but regulations can vary by specific park or land management area. It's always best to check the specific rules for each trail you plan to visit. Generally, dogs should be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.
While many trails are out-and-back, the Lake Chelan State Park offers the easy Little Bear Trail, which is a loop through a pine forest. The Echo Ridge Trails also feature a network of trails with various loop options, providing spectacular views of Lake Chelan.
The komoot community highly rates the trails in this guide, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Reviewers often praise the stunning panoramic views of Lake Chelan, the diverse natural beauty, and the variety of trails that cater to different family needs and skill levels.
Hike durations vary significantly depending on the trail's length and difficulty. For example, the easy Imus Creek Trail can be completed in about 30 minutes, while a section of the Chelan Lakeshore Trail might take around 3 hours. We recommend checking the estimated duration for each specific route in the guide.
Parking availability varies by trailhead. Popular spots like Lake Chelan State Park and areas near downtown Chelan generally have designated parking. For more remote trailheads, parking might be limited. It's advisable to check specific trailhead information before you go, especially during peak season.
Public transport options directly to many trailheads are limited. The Lady of the Lake ferry provides access to Stehekin and other points along the lake, which can be a starting point for some trails. For most other trailheads, personal vehicles are the most common way to access them.
Given the diverse ecosystems and potential for changing weather, layering is key. Comfortable, moisture-wicking clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, hats, and sun protection are recommended. Always bring extra water, snacks, and a small first-aid kit, especially for longer trails.
