Tips from the Community

Caro "Bandit"
July 21, 2025, Collegiate West/Collegiate East junction

Hiking southbound, this is the junction where you decide to hike the Collegiate West alternate (which follows the Continental Divide Trail) or the Collegiate East (which is the original Colorado Trail route). The CW West is more challenging, roughly ten miles longer and takes you into higher elevation, but offers breathtaking scenery, while the CW East stays lower and offers better accessibility to trail towns and hot springs.

Here, the trail leads to a break from the trees where you can enjoy stunning views of the meadow, the serene lake, and the surrounding mountains.

Twin Lakes are a pair of glacier-carved alpine lakes with an incredible backdrop featuring some of Colorado's tallest peaks. The lakes also offer access to the Colorado Trail, which runs along the south side.

This is an important trail intersection. There are two major trails (CDT and CT) that follow the same path lots of times but diverge here.

The Colorado Trail and Interlaken Trail merge onto the same path pretty quickly on the south side of the lakes.

July 12, 2023, Hayden Meadows

Hayden Meadows is a heavily used Forest Service area. There are restrooms next to the parking lot and signage posted at the trailhead. The area is known for its trout fishing in the Arkansas headwaters. There is also a small reservoir right next to the parking area. This is an especially great trail in the winter and spring months. While the rest of the high valley is covered in snow, Hayden Meadows often sees dry stints. The trail on the east side of the river is quieter and includes more singletrack. The side of the meadows next to the highway is a bit louder and less scenic, but it is really flat and can be good for faster running.

The Colorado Trail climbs over a moderate ridge on its way from Twin Lakes to Clear Creek. On the southern side of the ridge, there are open views of Clear Creek Reservoir off in the distance. In the other direction (west), there are excellent views of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness and some of the tallest summits in the range. The climb up here is not as steep as a lot of the summit trails in this area, making this part of the CT a bit more runnable. Likewise, this part of the CT usually thaws out near the beginning of spring and is one of the first bits of single track that becomes dry.
