A gorgeous, magical trail leading to a beautiful beach - what is not to love? Part of the Oregon Coastal Trail; it's possible to create a longer hiking loop with the beach and Valley Trail through Carl G Washburne State Park.

This area was formerly known as Devil's Elbow State Park before the park was expanded to include the lighthouse. The park really packs in the highlights in a small area. You can hike to the lighthouse and do a free tour, the former keeper's house is now a B&B, the Cave Creek Bridge provides a nice backdrop to the beach and rocks in front of you.

The views are amazing if you take the trail to go a little higher and pass the actual light house.

There are 4 family-friendly hiking trails in Rock Creek Wilderness, offering a variety of experiences suitable for different ages and abilities. Most of these are rated as easy, with one moderate option for families seeking a bit more challenge.
While the broader Rock Creek Wilderness is known for its undeveloped and challenging terrain, the family-friendly trails often feature more accessible paths. You can expect to walk through lush old-growth forests with towering Sitka spruce and Douglas fir, and experience the pristine rainforest canyons. The forest floor is often carpeted with mosses and ferns, creating a beautiful, natural setting.
Yes, for a very short and easy option, consider the Heceta Lighthouse Trail, which is just over 1 kilometer long. Another easy and relatively short loop is the Cape Cove Beach – Heceta Head Lighthouse loop from Heceta Head Light, which is about 2.8 kilometers. While some paths might be suitable for sturdy strollers, the wilderness character means many trails may have uneven surfaces, roots, or mud, so a carrier might be more versatile for very young children.
Generally, dogs are welcome on trails within the Siuslaw National Forest, which encompasses Rock Creek Wilderness. However, it's always best to check specific trail regulations before you go, as rules can vary. Always keep your dog on a leash and practice Leave No Trace principles to protect the wildlife and natural environment.
Rock Creek Wilderness benefits from a temperate climate, with fog cooling the area almost all summer and generally snow-free winters, allowing for year-round access. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery, with rhododendrons blooming in May. While conditions can be muddy and brushy, particularly in wetter seasons, the lush environment is beautiful any time of year.
Yes, the Hobbit and China Creek Loop is an excellent circular route option for families. It's rated as easy, spans nearly 7 kilometers, and offers a delightful journey through the area's natural beauty.
The family-friendly trails often lead through impressive old-growth forests, where you can marvel at tremendous Sitka spruce trees near the coast and old Douglas firs further inland. The pristine rainforest canyons and the vital waterways of Rock Creek and Big Creek are also prominent features. While specific viewpoints might not be formally designated, the natural beauty of the lush forest and coastal proximity offers many scenic moments.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.9 stars. Reviewers often praise the immersive experience of exploring untouched nature, the solitude, and the beauty of the old-growth forests and pristine rainforest canyons. The sense of remoteness and wildness, even close to the coast, is frequently highlighted as a unique draw.
Parking availability can vary. While the Rock Creek Wilderness is largely without developed trailheads, some of the more accessible family-friendly routes, especially those closer to Heceta Head, typically have designated parking areas. It's advisable to check the specific route details on komoot for parking information before your visit.
For families looking for a longer and slightly more challenging hike, the Heceta Head Trail is a moderate option. It covers nearly 9.4 kilometers and offers a rewarding experience with more elevation gain, allowing for a deeper exploration of the coastal forest environment.
Given the temperate climate and potential for muddy conditions, especially in wetter seasons, it's recommended to wear layers and waterproof or water-resistant outerwear. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are highly advisable due to potentially uneven and damp terrain. Even in summer, fog can cool the area, so a light jacket is often useful.
