The square was named after Stanisław Mieszkowski in 2003, and four years later his monument, created by Romuald Wiśniewski, was unveiled here. The location is not accidental – after the war, Mieszkowski was the first Polish captain of the port of Kołobrzeg and participated in its restoration after wartime destruction. His remains were only found in 2014 at Warsaw's "Łączka", and in 2017 he was buried at the Naval Cemetery in Gdynia.
