Lower DeCew Falls is a remote, roughly 8-metre cascade waterfall tucked into the gorge below Upper DeCew Falls. It’s harder to reach than its upper counterpart, following an unclear, often muddy path upstream along Beaverdams Creek that can be unsafe after heavy rain, but from here you get a nice view right along the trail. The falls get their name from John DeCew, a United Empire Loyalist who acquired the land in 1792 and built water-powered mills here that became an important milling centre in Upper Canada.

After our world trip in 2022, we came back to Niagara Falls in 2024 for the solar eclipse. We prefer the Canadian side and it is always an experience to be here. A visit to the falls in winter over Christmas is also particularly recommended, as the atmosphere is very special then and the rush of tourists is limited.

Niagara Falls is one of the most famous natural wonders on earth. Standing at its edge and watching the enormous masses of water fall, hearing the thunder, and feeling the spray like a veil on your skin, you feel incredibly small. This spectacle is so powerful that it takes some time before you can believe your perception. To compensate for the difference in altitude between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, the water of the Niagara River falls in two falls, divided by the small island of Goat Island. The border between the USA and Canada runs between the two. The Canadian Falls, also called Horseshoe Falls because of its crescent-shaped, 790-meter-long edge, has a free fall of 52 meters. The American Falls, after a drop of 21 meters, hits a pile of rubble created by a collapse in 1954. Its upper edge is almost straight and 363 meters long. The local Native Americans once gave the falls their name, Niagara. It means "thundering water."
