The Ryvoan Bothy is an authentic and, above all, small bothy. Because it's also relatively close to a large parking lot and visitor center for Glenmore Forest Park, and the path to it is easy to walk and cycle, it's likely to be crowded. Therefore, it wasn't my favorite during my cycling trip through the Cairngorms, but it does offer excellent accommodations with a few sleeping places, a table and chairs, and a stove.

A few years ago, this bothy was a ruin, but it has since been renovated and is now a wonderful place to stay. It has two rooms, one filled with bunk beds, and a stove to keep warm. Just outside the bothy flows the Geldie Burn River, providing fresh water. There's even a newly built toilet block right behind the bothy, courtesy of the MBA and Mar Lodge Estate.

This is an emergency refuge so it is requested that there are no planned stays here. and its really tiny.. If crossing the Lairig Ghru from the north in the wet seasons then worth making a decision at glen more or linn of dee before committing as it can get a little wet, cold and nerve testing in the colder months if in spate..

The Cairngorm Mountains offer a variety of shelters, ranging from traditional, free-to-use bothies to more equipped commercial huts and cabins. Bothies are basic shelters, often maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association, providing free accommodation for walkers and climbers, typically without electricity or running water. Commercial huts and cabins, on the other hand, usually offer more amenities and comfort for a fee.
Several bothies are highly regarded by visitors. Ryvoan Bothy is a classic Scottish bothy, popular and relatively easy to access from Glenmore. Ruigh Aiteachain Bothy, recently renovated, is considered a gem in a scenic riverside location. Bob Scott's Bothy is another popular choice, easily accessible from the Linn of Dee and known for its large communal area and fireplace.
Yes, beyond traditional bothies, you can find commercial options. For example, The Woodsman's Hut (The Lazy Duck) offers an award-winning, off-grid hideaway with unique features like outdoor showers and a compost loo. Cairngorm Bothies in Logie Coldstone provide 12 off-grid, self-catering bothies powered by solar energy, with wood-burning stoves and accessible options, offering a blend of comfort and sustainability. You can find more information about Cairngorm Bothies at visitcairngorms.com.
Allt Scheicheachan bothy is considered ideal for first-timers to bothy experiences and the Cairngorms National Park. It's accessible via an easygoing, three-hour route through evergreen forest and heather moorlands, offering opportunities to spot wildlife.
Bothies are generally basic. They typically lack electricity and running water, offering a 'camping without a tent' experience. Many have a fireplace or multifuel stove, but you'll often need to bring your own fuel. Some, like Ruigh Aiteachain Bothy and Bob Scott's Bothy, have composting or septic tank toilets. Recently renovated bothies like Red House Bothy may offer bunk beds and separate outhouses with toilets.
Bothies are free to use but rely on the respect and responsibility of visitors. Always take out all your litter, avoid leaving perishable food, guard against fire risks, and ensure the bothy is tidy upon departure. It's also good practice to carry your own fuel for stoves and be considerate of other users.
The best time to visit depends on your experience and desired activities. Summer and early autumn offer more predictable weather and longer daylight hours, ideal for hiking and exploring. Winter visits can be challenging due to harsh weather, snow, and shorter days, requiring significant experience and proper gear. Always check weather forecasts and conditions before heading out, especially in winter.
The Cairngorms offer a wide range of outdoor activities. Near many huts, you can find excellent opportunities for hiking, trail running, and cycling. For example, you can explore various waterfall hikes, challenging running trails, or scenic cycling routes. Many bothies serve as excellent basecamps for bagging Munros (mountains over 3,000 feet).
Yes, the Fords of Avon Refuge is a critical emergency shelter situated between Cairn Gorm and Ben Macdui, the two highest peaks in the Cairngorms. It's a small, primitive shelter designed for basic protection from the weather, not for planned overnight stays, and serves a vital lifesaving purpose for hikers in remote areas.
Many huts are set in stunning locations. Corrour Bothy, for instance, is in the dramatic Lairig Ghru pass with views of the Devil's Point. Hutchison Memorial Hut, one of Britain's highest bothies, offers spectacular views from its remote, high-altitude location. Red House Bothy provides magnificent views over the Cairngorms, and Ruigh Aiteachain Bothy is in the notably beautiful Glen Feshie.
Ryvoan Bothy is relatively easy to access from Glenmore, lying just over the Ryvoan Pass. Bob Scott's Bothy is also easily accessible from the Linn of Dee, making it a convenient stop for many visitors.
