The Church of San Lorenzo is a Catholic place of worship with neoclassical, neo-Renaissance, and modernist styles, located at Piazzale San Lorenzo 5 in Calestano, in the province and diocese of Parma. It is the seat of a parish within the pastoral area of Montagna. HISTORY The place of worship was originally built in the Middle Ages; the earliest evidence of its existence dates back to 1230, when the chapel was mentioned in the Capitulum seu Rotulus Decimarum of the Diocese of Parma among the dependencies of the parish of Bardone. In 1490, the Romanesque church underwent some restoration work. Towards the end of the 16th century, the church was enlarged with the construction of the first two chapels, while in 1659, the chapel on the left next to the presbytery was built. At the beginning of the 18th century, the church was significantly modified, replacing the old wooden trusses with vaulted ceilings, adding three additional side chapels, and decorating the interior in neoclassical style. The bell tower was also erected during the same period; the work was completed by 1790. In 1812, the church was enriched with the polychrome marble high altar and the wooden choir, originating from the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Parma, suppressed by Napoleonic decree. In 1907, the façade was rebuilt in neo-Renaissance style based on a design by architect Moderanno Chiavelli; in 1913, the bell tower was also raised. In 1944, the church was severely damaged by Allied bombing, which caused the façade and the first chapel on the right to collapse. Between 1949 and 1950, the façade was rebuilt in a modernist style designed by architect Italo Costa. During the course of the work, the destroyed chapel was rebuilt, the flooring was replaced, and the interior decorations in late Renaissance and neo-Baroque styles were restored and integrated by the painter Regolini. Between 1965 and 1975, the flooring was redone again. Between 1985 and 1990, the church underwent restoration work, which involved the roofing and façade; between 2000 and 2002, the work extended to the decorations of the chapels and the presbytery, while in 2007, the exterior flooring was replaced. On December 23, 2008, a violent earthquake struck the area; between 2009 and 2011, the building underwent restoration and structural consolidation work. La Cava is always La Cava..... You look out and... without thinking too much, you go. If you get past the first part, it's done :-). Jokes aside. This is a stretch to be tackled with caution and with good MTB riding skills. To avoid the first part, you can take the short variant to the left which in any case is steep and has some roots.
