Tempesta Spring

Highlight • Natural Monument

This large fountain is located in one of the main junctions of the trail system of the Colli Albani park. It is a seasonal source so the presence of water is not guaranteed all year round. It is a very suggestive place to immerse yourself in nature, despite being just a few steps from Via dei Laghi.

Nemi

Highlight • Settlement

Located almost in the center of the Alban Hills, at 521 m asl, Nemi is the second smallest municipality in the Castelli Romani area, it is known for the cultivation of strawberries to be enjoyed absolutely with cream in one of the many pastry shops in the village and for the relative festival, which takes place every year on the first Sunday of June. The historic center is located in a panoramic position on the homonymous lake, famous for having been the site of the discovery in 1927-1932 of two Roman celebratory ships of the age of Emperor Caligula, preserved in the Museum of Roman Ships until their destruction in 1944 .
Nemi has been awarded the "orange flag" by the Italian Touring Club for the excellent quality of the welcome and stay of the tourist.

Sacred Way - Monte Cavo

Highlight • Trail

The Via Sacra is a beautiful paved road from the Roman era that climbs to the top of Monte Cavo. Today it is famous above all for the panoramic point to which it leads, called "Occhialone", from which you can enjoy a suggestive panorama that simultaneously embraces the two lakes in the area, that of Albano and that of Nemi.

This mountain was so important because on its top stood the temple of Jupiter of Latium. Every year, at the temple, the Feriae Latinae were held, great celebrations in honor of this divinity, particularly important in Lazio. The road that went up the mountain to reach this sacred place therefore took the name of Via Sacra. And this same road was also traveled by the victorious generals who celebrated their triumph: for this reason it was also known as the triumphal road.

The temple of Giove Laziale, however, was replaced in the Middle Ages by a hermitage dedicated to St. Peter. This later became a monastery and in more modern times even a hotel, where various important people seem to have stayed.

Today Monte Cavo is an important radio and television transmission center. And in fact on its top there are essentially only antennas, repeaters and various pylons.

Lake Nemi

Highlight • Lake

Seen from above, Lake Nemi is a small landscape "pearl". Seen from below it is no exception, and one realizes even more of what one of the craters of the ancient Latium Volcano must have been. To visit along the way the Museum of Roman Ships or the temple of Diana. The ascent to Genzano is challenging if you do it from the left side of the lake. Possibility to do the whole tour.

Lake Giulianello

Highlight • Lake

Lake Giulianello, also called "Lago La Torre" is the third volcanic lake in the Colli Albani, after Lake Albano and Lake Nemi. In 2007, by decree of the President of the Lazio Region, it was erected as a natural monument. It is an oval-shaped volcanic lake with a perimeter of 1.8 km, and is located between the municipalities of Velletri and Cori, in an exclave administered by the municipality of Artena. Orographically, it can be identified in the plain between the Colli Albani and the Lepini mountains. Site of pleasant scenic beauty, it hosts a remarkable biodiversity of fauna (fish and birdlife) and flora (reed thickets and secular oaks along the shore).

A treasure trove of history and nature 💎 Lake Nemi, anciently called "Diana's Mirror", is one of the most evocative stops in the entire Park of the Roman Castles. Perfect for a loop tour or as a scenic detour. The descent towards the shores offers views that seem painted, with the perched village overlooking the blue water.

Unfortunately, the tour is not practicable at this time due to some fallen trees along the route, but it will surely be cleared of these trees as soon as possible and it is a beautiful ride.

After a long time, the water has returned, perhaps thanks to the rains of the past few months. There are also some tadpoles that have been placed in the fountain.

Fontan Tempesta is much more than a simple spring: it is a melting pot of history, geology, and legend located in the heart of the Castelli Romani Park, along the ancient path connecting Genzano, Nemi, and Rocca di Papa. 1. History and Name The name "Tempesta" has ancient roots. Some historians link it to the Tempesta family, local nobles in the Middle Ages. Others, more romantically, maintain that the area is so named for the frequency of intense atmospheric phenomena due to the particular shape of the Nemi volcanic crater, which "attracts" thunderstorms. 2. A Hydrographic Turning Point The spring is located approximately 600 meters above sea level. Geologically, the water that flows here is the result of filtering through the pyroclastic rocks of the Laziale Volcano. The fact that it has returned to flow after years of drought is an important sign of the restoration of surface water tables, often strained by the scarce rainfall of recent years. 3. Crossroads of Pilgrims and Wayfarers Historically, Fontan Tempesta was an obligatory stop for those traveling the Southern Via Francigena or for pilgrims heading to the Temple of Diana in Nemi. Even today, it is a favorite "turning point" for bikers and hikers because it represents the coolest and most sheltered spot in the forest, where the microclimate remains humid even in the height of summer.

Nice spot to make pause and regain energy. Don’t expect water flowing during summer months

Hello Do you know if the trail is exposed in any places? We have a 15-month-old baby, and my wife is particularly afraid of the exposed sections. Thank you very much.

Starting from Lariano it is a long walk. The only advice is to do it in company because you will meet flocks of sheep, sometimes, without shepherds.

Fantastic spot reachable by car or on foot from both Nemi and Genzano where you can rest along the lake, camp out and feed the ducks.
