May 8, 2026, Chiesa e Monastero di Santa Chiara

In a panoramic position, on the hill known as Poggio del Massaro, stands the church and monastery of Santa Chiara, a place of great spiritual and historical significance for Acquapendente. The area is immersed in tranquility and overlooks the surrounding territory from above, making it a perfect destination for those who love the combination of nature, spirituality, and architecture. The foundation of the monastery dates back to May 27, 1333.

The church was originally built in 1600 by Bishop Giovan Battista Febei. Unfortunately, the church was completely destroyed by bombing during World War II, specifically on June 8, 1944. Despite this destruction, the church was completely rebuilt in 1953 under the leadership of Bishop Luigi Boccadoro and was reopened to the public on December 12, 1954.

In an extraordinary panoramic position above Lake Bolsena, Grotte di Castro has ancient Etruscan roots. Founded in the 7th century BC, the settlement maintained a certain importance until the 3rd century BC, when it became part of the dominions of Rome. Nearby is the suggestive necropolis of Pianezze. In the heart of the historic centre, in the building that once housed the mayor, there is the archaeological and popular tradition museum, which displays a notable collection of Etruscan finds. The sanctuary of Santa Maria del Suffragio, in baroque style, stands above an 8th century parish church and houses precious wooden inlays and the wooden statue of the Madonna del Suffragio, venerated as miraculous.

Lake of volcanic origin, nestled at the foot of the Cimini Mountains. It is possible to bathe in its waters. In a few minutes you reach the beautiful historic center of Ronciglione which is the closest town

Free Parking - take some hiking boots in case you want to explore the area. Due to Mosquitos I would not recommend short pants in the summer time like early June July.

February 22, 2022, Lake Bolsena

Lake Bolsena is located in Lazio, it is the fifth largest lake in Italy and is also the largest lake of volcanic origin in Europe. The main caldera, which has taken on the characteristic elliptical shape typical of lakes of volcanic origin, is set in the mountainous-hilly group of the Volsini Mountains. The formation of Lake Bolsena was very turbulent. The volcanic system of the Volsini, following the eruptions, emptied of magmatic material and ended up collapsing on itself creating a large caldera which over the years was filled with water. it is largely powered by rainwater. The only emissary is the Marta stream which flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Two islands emerge within Lake Bolsena: Bisentina Island and Martana Island.

Acquapendente is a small, "typical" Italian town in the far north of the Italian region of Lazio on the border with Tuscany. Worth seeing are the picturesque alleys of the old town and the interior of the Basilica San Sepolcro from the twelfth century. As the name of the city suggests, there are several small waterfalls in the area around Acquapendente.
