Very close to the old town of Bolzano, surrounded by vineyards, lies the impressive Maretsch Castle. It is a center for events where weddings and congresses are held, but also exhibitions. The oldest part of Maretsch Castle was built in the 13th century. In the 14th century, the castle was expanded. The current appearance of Maretsch Castle dates from the 16th century, when the Römer family transformed the fortified complex into a Renaissance castle and adorned the magnificent halls with important frescoes. The four round outer towers also date from this period. Maretsch Castle is also unique due to its location: unlike most castles and palaces in South Tyrol, it is not located on a rocky hill that is difficult to access, but was built as a so-called lowland castle. Until around 1650, Maretsch Castle was protected by a moat, which was subsequently filled in. A magnificent view of Maretsch Castle with the legendary rose garden in the background can be admired from the promenade of the Bolzano Water Wall. Several halls in Maretsch Castle in Bolzano impress with worth-seeing frescoes and original ceilings from the 16th century. If you look closely, you can discover interesting details. For example, in the Roman Hall, Moses is depicted with horns, and patience is also represented in an allegorical depiction of virtues. This virtue was not often depicted, but the patron of the paintings, Lukas Römer, needed patience: he repeatedly encountered hostility due to his sympathies for Protestantism.
