Colle del Preit welcomes you at the gates of the Gardetta plateau. The landscape here seems almost lunar with the rock that rises imposingly among the soft green meadows. You are at over 2000 meters above sea level, the climb to get there requires the right amount of effort and the atmosphere is truly unique. Admiring the panorama that surrounds you sharpens your sight and hearing, the whistle of some marmots reveals their presence among the rocks.

I was really looking forward to going up to the Santuario della Madonna del Colletto. I had been to this area several times and had not had the opportunity to go up here. So on the trip through Piedmont in July 2022 I made sure that the planned route passed through here. We went up the western slope, the one used by the Giro d'Italia when it first went up here in 1999, on the famous stage where the Fauniera was climbed, with the spectacle of Pantani climbing and the stratospheric descent of Paolo Savoldelli. I have to admit that the climb itself is not very attractive. Once you leave the village of Festiona behind, you enter a forest and there are hardly any views over the valley. You can only focus on the road, its curves, straights (which there are) and difficult slopes. The asphalt is old, with a lot of gravel and very uneven, which obviously adds difficulty to the climb. The climb up the western side is 7.1 km, 576 metres of elevation and an average gradient of 8.1%. Therefore, it is very hard!! And there are several sections above 12%, especially in the first kilometres, where the gradient is irregular, with very hard sections and small rest areas. The views of the Valdieri valley from the Sanctuary are very beautiful, and also of all the mountains covered with forests and vegetation in the surroundings. We took advantage of the porch at the entrance to the Sanctuary to take shelter from the sun and the heat, and to stock up on food and eat some spectacular sandwiches. I remember it fondly. Below is the altimetry of the climb published by @cyclingcols, the best in these matters --> http://www.cyclingcols.com/col/Colletto

One of the hardest climbs ever in Piedmont, and above all we must not underestimate the descent which is very technical.

From 2023 on the upper part of the equipped area on the right there is a dirt road, even further on the right towards the bush there is the TR1 path which will take you down to Rittana, ps: some sections are a bit complicated due to the uneven surface

The Preit hill is located at 2,083 meters above sea level and the road to reach it starts from Ponte di Marmora. The climb is quite demanding, with peaks of over 18% in the last kilometres. The view is beautiful and car traffic is practically absent in the entire second part after the town of Preit.

The path starts next to a cart track and seems hidden and practically a gully, there is a sign with a white arrow

The Demonte area, nestled in Italy's Valle Stura, offers several impressive peaks. Monte Tenibres, the highest in Valle Stura, provides extensive panoramas. Another significant peak is Cima di Corborant, located on the main Alpine watershed between Italy and France, known for its 360-degree views and unique features like the "Buco della Marmotta".
Yes, the region is famous for its demanding mountain passes. Colle Fauniera, also known as Colle dei Morti, is a high mountain pass in the Cottian Alps, renowned in the cycling world. It's one of Europe's highest paved passes and has been featured in the Giro d'Italia. You can find more details about this challenging climb at Colle Fauniera.
Beyond stunning views, you can encounter distinctive natural features. For instance, the route to Cima di Corborant passes by the scenic Lausfer lakes and the "Buco della Marmotta" (Marmot's Hole), a natural rock formation. On the way to Becco Alto d'Ischiator, you'll see the beautiful Ischiator lakes and potentially snowfields earlier in the season.
The recommended period for ascents to higher peaks like Monte Tenibres is generally late July to mid-October, when paths are typically clear of snow. For ski mountaineering on peaks like Testa dell'Ubac, spring (April-May) is ideal due to steep snowy slopes.
Yes, the Chiot Rosa Equipped Area is a great option. It's a panoramic point with facilities like a fountain, tables, and barbecue spots, and it's easily accessible by car. The Sanctuary of San Magno also offers parking and is considered family-friendly.
Becco Alto d'Ischiator provides excellent panoramic views of both the Italian and French Alps, including the Ubaye and Ubayette valleys. Similarly, Enciastraia and Rocca dei Tre Vescovi, located on the border, offer remarkable panoramic views across both Italian and French territories.
Below the Passo del Tenibres, on the ascent to Monte Tenibres, you can find old military ruins. Additionally, the Sanctuary of San Magno has very ancient origins, standing where a temple dedicated to the God Mars once was, and features beautiful frescoes.
Absolutely. Demonte is a great base for cycling. You can find various routes for gravel biking, including loops on the Gardetta plateau. For mountain biking, there are trails like the Gias della Sella Soprano loop. Explore more options on the Gravel biking around Demonte and MTB Trails around Demonte guide pages.
For experienced hikers seeking a challenge, the ascent to Testa dell'Ubac from Pontebernardo involves a significant elevation gain and often requires crampons and an ice axe due to steep snowy slopes. The combined ascent of Enciastraia and Rocca dei Tre Vescovi also offers a demanding trekking experience with scree slopes and exposed sections.
Visitors appreciate the unparalleled, vast views from peaks like Monte Tenibres and the superb 360-degree panoramas from Cima di Corborant. The varied terrain, from marshy areas to high alpine landscapes, and the sense of solitude found on passes like Colle Fauniera are also highly valued. The region's unique geological formations and challenging routes provide a rewarding experience for outdoor enthusiasts.
Yes, the Preit Pass offers a challenging yet quiet cycling experience. The road to Preit Pass has minimal vehicle traffic in its latter part, providing beautiful views and a strenuous ride ideal for those seeking solitude and scenic beauty. The landscape near the pass is often described as almost lunar, with imposing rock formations.
Many visitors enjoy the diverse hiking opportunities. For example, the route to Monte Tenibres is a rewarding, long ascent passing by picturesque features like Lago Mongioie.
