Patrick
September 3, 2025, Church of San Giorgio in Dorio

The ancient Church of San Giorgio is located in Mandonico, the old rural settlement above Dorio. Dazzling white, it stands on a grassy clearing, a short walk from the Sentiero del Viandante (Wayfarer's Path). Due to numerous renovations, it is difficult to determine the exact date of construction, although it shows some signs of the Romanesque period. The church existed as early as 1412 and had a portico in front of the entrance. In 1506, it became the village's parish church, a title it held until 1677, when the parish was moved to the center of Dorio. Its current appearance dates back to the 17th century, as does the elegant portal, but it underwent several changes over the following centuries; for example, the façade was modified in 1804. The interior features a single nave with a barrel-vaulted presbytery and a semicircular apse dating back to the original structure, plausibly dating to the 13th century. The church was originally richly painted, but of the ancient decoration, which also included the apse with the Evangelists and the chapel on the north side, only the frescoes on the left wall remain, restored in 1983. The series of six panels (352 x 297 cm) is divided into two registers and is enclosed by a frame with circular clipei and leafy branches. The upper section depicts St. George on horseback helping a girl and slaying the dragon, against a background of a lake with hills, rocks, and castles; to the side is a Madonna enthroned with Child. In the lower section, from left to right, are depicted St. Michael in the iconography of the weighing of souls; St. Anthony the Abbot accompanied by a piglet; the Madonna enthroned with baby Jesus; and a bishop perhaps identifiable as St. Gotthard, patron saint of merchants, feverish people, and wayfarers. The precious frescoes, created in 1492 in a late Gothic style, are compared to the works of Battista da Musso and Bernardino De Rossi.
