The Unterganzner hereditary estate, run by Josephus Mayr, is located on the eastern edge of the Bolzano Basin at an altitude of 285 meters and has been owned by the Mayr family since 1629. The vineyards grow on porphyry soil and are known for native grape varieties such as Lagrein and Schiava (Vernatsch). Of particular note are the wines "Lamarein," an Amarone-style red wine made from dried Lagrein grapes, and "Composition Reif," a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Lagrein. The Mayr family combines their passion for wine with music—every family member plays an instrument or sings. The winery is easily accessible by bike. A cycle path along the Isarco River leads nearby, and the route, starting in Bolzano's city center, is a pleasant ride.

Wine has been produced at the Unterganzner Hof on the eastern outskirts of Bolzano for almost four centuries. The passion for wine is deeply rooted in the Mayr family, and Josephus Mayr, who runs the winery in the tenth generation, emphasizes that he benefits from the meticulous work of his ancestors. The precise selection of vines and the detailed work in the vineyard are the foundation of the winery. The winery is located in an ideal region for red wine, with an excellent climate, good air circulation, many hours of sunshine, and alluvial soils. Other factors such as the high plant density, the advanced age of the vines, and the pergola training also contribute to the quality of the wines. The range includes St. Magdalener and Lagrein, which are aged in oak barrels and can age in the bottle for many years. The winery is constantly working to improve its wines, for example, by greening its cultivation and increasing the planting of fungus-resistant vines. In addition to their passion for wine, music is the Mayr family's second great love – everyone plays an instrument or sings. I can absolutely recommend the Steineggerhof. Super friendly hotel staff, delicious and balanced breakfast buffet and 5-course evening menu and a very nice location. Whether you are a meat lover, vegetarian or vegan, there is something for everyone and everything tastes delicious. The bike storage room is very spacious and equipped with enough power sockets and tools.
