August 27, 2025, Lijstermolen on Baneberg

The summit of the slope lies between the Rodeberg and the Vidaigneberg. Near the summit stands the Lijstermolen (Listers Mill). A chairlift runs between the Baneberg and the Vidaigneberg, gliding over the saddle valley between the two "mountains" and the vineyards of the Entre-Deux-Monts, offering panoramic views of northern France and the Belgian coastal plain. The summit is 140 meters high. The name comes from the Bane family, who owned the mountain in the 13th and 14th centuries. The slope is also sometimes called Gildestraat (Gilde Street). https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baneberg

A truly beautiful place! To be explored both by bike and on foot! Excerpt: https://top.vlaanderen/fr/park/kasteelpark-de-lovie-poperinge/ A beautifully landscaped park around a castle. Open to the public. In spring, the crocuses and a row of Japanese cherry trees are particularly eye-catching. The castle building itself is currently being renovated. This estate is home to the non-profit organization De Lovie, which supports children, young people, and adults with intellectual disabilities in the Westhoek region.

Right next to the monastery is this Marian grotto, which invites you to visit. A place of silence.

After Benedictine nuns had already lived there from 1260 to 1355 and nuns of the Order of the Redeemer from 1615 to 1784, Trappists from the nearby French monastery of Mont des Cats founded the Belgian Priory of Saint Sixtus across the border in 1831 under Prior François-Marie Van Langendonck, which was elevated to the rank of an abbey (Sint-Sixtusabdij) in 1871. Since 1839 (brewery expanded from 1875 to 1878) the abbey has been associated with a Trappist beer produced by the monks under the name Westvleteren (2005 award as "Best Beer in the World").
