The name 'wolfskuil' (wolf pit) dates from a time when wolves were still common in our regions and posed a threat to livestock. It was literally a deep, dug pit that served as a trap. These pits were covered with branches and leaves to make them invisible. In the middle, bait (such as a live sheep or a piece of meat) was often placed on a pole to attract the wolf. In the Middle Ages and up to the 19th century, wolf control was a bitter necessity for farming communities. Today, nothing is left of the physical pit. However, the name has been preserved as a field name (toponym) that now serves as a landmark.

At Hoepertingenstraat 26 stands the 17th-century Paanhuis. In this brewery, beer was only allowed to be brewed under the supervision of the local lords, hence the alliance coat of arms of the van Scharenberg-de Lynden families above the door. During the ancien regime, the building also served as the courthouse of the local aldermanic bench... hence the bluestone seating furniture in front of the building. @https://geogidsen.be/blogentry.php?bid=58

Sint-Vaast or Vedastus of Atrecht (near Limoges, second half of the 5th century - Arras, February 6, 540) was bishop of Atrecht (French: Arras) in the French Netherlands. Hailing from near Limoges, he was sent to Atrecht as bishop by Remigius of Reims around 500. Later, the abbey of Sint-Vaast, named after Vedastus, was founded there. @https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vedastus
