For a long time, this dead tree benefited biodiversity, serving as a shelter and food source for insects and birds, but recently the ravages of time have taken their toll, and it has completely rotted away. You can still find some traces of the carved face on one of the pieces lying along the path.

Since the end of the 13th century, this has been the playing court and summer residence of the abbots of the Sint-Trudo Abbey of Sint-Truiden. In the 18th century, it became the permanent residence of the abbots. Initially, it was a simple farm that was fortified in 1329. Over the centuries, the castle was repeatedly rebuilt and enlarged. The current farm section was built in the 17th century. In 1861, Charles Whettnall rebuilt the castle in the English Neo-Tudor style. A fire in 1932 largely destroyed the castle. It was only in the 1950s, after a complete renovation in a simpler Neoclassical style, that the castle was once again suitable for habitation.

At the highest point of Helshoven, you can now enjoy a breathtaking view over the Haspengouw landscape. Artist Frits Jeuris has created a unique work of art from dozens of felled fruit trees from the area. “Helsh(ea)ven”, a wooden work of art consisting of 90 standard cherry trees, each fifty years old, was hit by the cherry plague virus at the end of 2016, a contagious plant disease that causes small fruits on cherries. Now the felled trees are getting a second life. The work of art symbolizes the dynamic landscape of Haspengouw.
