More Information
Life along the River Wye
There is no doubt that the rivers in the Peak District have shaped life here for centuries and they continue to support life today. One of the area’s major rivers, the Wye is brimming with fish thanks to its nutrient-rich waters.
Using the Wye as your guide, you can easily head off on the best hiking trails around Ashford-in-the-Water along the flat valley floor. The river dominates the landscape and is such a beautiful sight, winding its way through the dales.
The Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve
The village is right on the edge of the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve and you could spend weeks, if not much longer, rambling the trails in the five dales that make up the reserve.
Walks from Ashford-in-the-Water can take you into any of the reserve’s dales and you can pick your route depending on how far you want to hike. Each dale is different too, with one of the most popular being Lathkill.
When you go for a stroll in Lathkill Dale, you’ll find yourself in ancient wildwood. If you are hiking in winter, you’ll spot the fast-running River Lathkill but in dry summers, you may not find it at all. If you do walk alongside the running water, watch out for water voles who forage for food and live in the prime waterside real estate.
Ashford-in-the-Water’s hikes to the northwest of the village will bring you to Monsal, Cressbrook and Monk’s Dales. The grasslands in and on top of these dales hold a wealth of plant life and, in spring and summer, are alive with insects and butterflies.
A glimpse into village life
Bakewell is a thriving town but Ashford-in-the-Water is its picturesque neighbour. The village can get busy in the spring and summer holidays, especially because nobody can pass through it without stopping to marvel at its quaint perfection.
The village is listed in the Domesday Book and perhaps its biggest draw is the packhorse bridge that was also the site of the annual sheepwash. The bridge is almost embarrassingly beautiful, languishing over the Wye and giving walkers an ideal place to pause.
Ashford is also one of the local villages that engages in well dressing each year. No, this doesn’t mean that everyone dresses well, although we’re not calling anybody scruffy. Instead, the villagers decorate slabs of clay with organic materials like flowers and place them around the village’s six wells. This little nod to the region’s history is one of the many wonderful things to discover whilst hiking from Ashford-in-the-Water.
