Tips from the Community

Joschi
May 31, 2026, View from Hoher Berg

Der Hohe Berg is a striking elevation (an „ambitious earth mound“) on the Via Baltica in the area of the Barrien – Harpstedt stage. Shortly after starting in Barrien, the path leads over the Der Hohe Berg (58.5m), where a wind farm is located and from this height, the pilgrim sees Bremen to the north. The section is part of the Westphalian stages, where pilgrims often walk on hard tarred roads, which is a strain on the joints.

The "Hohe Berg" (High Mountain) was certainly named with a wink. But since it is the highest elevation far and wide, and also has the observation tower, you have a fantastic panoramic view - in good weather, all the way to Bremen!

The Werdersee is not a natural lake, but an artificially created side arm of the Weser (created 1952–1958). It primarily serves as a flood relief channel. In the event of extreme flooding of the Weser, excess water can be diverted into the Werdersee and the adjacent Pauliner Marsch. The devastating Weser breakthrough of 1981 showed that the capacity of the Weser weir at Hastedt was insufficient. The water at that time found its own way through the allotment garden area. As a result, the Werdersee was extended to the east to function as a controlled retention area.

Next to a small bridge is the only rest area in the vastness of the Leester Marsh. We would have liked to stop there, but unfortunately, the spot was occupied. That's why we didn't just point our camera at it. So please feel free to add a photo of the rest area.
