This is what the St. Otger parish says: The Hilgenberg Chapel was first mentioned in historical records in 1525. The present chapel was rebuilt in 1695 by Prince-Bishop Christian von Plettenberg, whose coat of arms is displayed on the gable wall. Since 1717, pilgrimages from neighboring villages have been recorded, and miraculous healings between 1739 and 1749 led to an increasing stream of pilgrims. Documents of thanksgiving from this period are on display in the chapel. The pilgrimage ended with the theft of the Madonna image on the night of September 13 and 14, 1886. The present Madonna, called the Raesfeld Madonna, was made available to the parish on permanent loan from the Diocese of Münster by Bishop Michael Keller in 1954.

Today there was a kindergarten there again; for the children there is really nothing nicer than playing with nature in the middle of the forest.

The Berkel is a river that rises in Germany, flows through the Achterhoek in the Netherlands and flows into the IJssel at Zutphen. The Rijn en IJssel Water Board is responsible for the management of the Dutch part of the Berkel.

The Hilgenberg Chapel was built on a Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age cremation cemetery, which suggests that this place already had religious significance at that time. Information can be found here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilgenbergkapelle

Great route based on the theme of "The Battle of the Lohner Bruch", which took place at this point in 1623. Here station 5 with information board. Station 6 is about 1km away.
