A castle in the location of today's palace is mentioned as early as 1250. Ownership changed very frequently over the centuries. After the war, Otto Mecheels founded the Hohenstein Institute in 1946, which is still based in Hohenstein Castle today. The site is privately owned, but you can venture inside to take pictures when the gate is open.
