    Hiking

Pretty view of the SF skyline from the entrance to a vast trail and fireroad network, for long hikes into the Marin Hills and Mt Tam, some shared with mountain bikes.

Bob Middagh & Horse Hill Trail loop

If you're looking for an easy hike with big payoffs, the Bob Middagh & Horse Hill Trail loop is a fantastic option. This 3.9-mile (6.3 km) route, with 542 feet (165 metres) of elevation gain, offers stunning panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline, Richardson Bay, and Mount Tamalpais. You'll hike through open grasslands dotted with oak trees and might even spot grazing horses on Horse Hill, giving the area a unique "Old California" feel. Expect a pleasant 1 hour and 49 minute journey on a mix of single-track and fire roads.

Planning your visit is straightforward, as this trail is considered easy and suitable for various fitness levels. While generally accessible, be prepared for potentially muddy sections on the single-track paths if you go during the winter rainy season. The trail is multi-use, so you'll share it with equestrians and mountain bikers; dogs are also permitted but must be leashed on trails and under voice control on fire roads.

One of the most charming aspects of this loop is the opportunity to observe the horses that graze on Horse Hill, a nod to the area's ranching history. Beyond the horses, the preserve is a haven for wildlife, with raptors like red-tailed hawks often seen overhead, and vibrant wildflowers blooming in the spring. This trail offers a rewarding experience with varied terrain and impressive vistas, making it a great choice for a quick escape into nature.
