Beautiful medieval castle with what I'd call the best views in the Dales! Dating back to 14th century and built by Richard le Scrope, the then Lord Chancellor of England, the ruins have had legions of important people reside there including Mary, Queen of Scots (imprisoned for 6 months in 1568!) and her entourage while en route from Scotland to Gloucestershire.

Bolton Castle is a magnificent 14th-century castle in a village of almost the same name – Castle Bolton. The quadrangular castle was built by the 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton, Richard, costing 18,000 Marks at the time.
In the 16th century, the castle was torched under the orders of King Henry VIII after the 8th Baron Scrope supported a rebellion against his religious reforms. But, the damage was repaired after a few years. 30 years later, Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner at the castle for six months.
