This giant, green whaleback rises high above the brooding reservoirs of the Talla and Megget Valleys to reach a sumptuous vantagepoint. King of the Manor Hills group, it lords over the region and can be connected to other high points, Cramalt Craig and Dollar Law, to make for a splendid wilderness hike.
A rugged giant of the Southern Uplands
Unfortunately, the summit’s beguilingly bleak expanse has been tamed by the building of various telecommunication structures. However, the need for access means that there is a land rover track that runs all the way to the summit from the A701, making this the most straightforward of walking routes to Broad Law’s summit. This also makes winter ascents possible even in difficult conditions. Another path accesses Broad Law from the south, starting between the Talla and Meggat reservoirs.
As the highest ground for many miles around, Broad Law enjoys an extensive panorama. The most prominent waves on a veritable green sea of gentle giants are the Moffat Hills to the south and the other nearby Manor Hills to the north east. To the north, the isolated hump of Tinto also catches the eye, whilst, on a clear day, Arran’s jagged profile and the beginnings of the Southern Highlands can be seen on the distant horizon.
Moffat, Peebles and Biggar are the closest towns, each boasting camping and lodging options. As one of the least inhabited parts of the UK, a wild camp under a galaxy of stars is an enticing proposition if the forecast is favourable.
