Djouce Summit

Hiking

5.0

(163)

Ireland’s Wicklow Mountains are majestic and make for the perfect adventuring ground. Lying to the south of Dublin, Djouce sits in the Wicklows and offers easy access to great heights and superb views. The Irish Sea is just a stone’s throw away, and is revealed in all its magnificence from the summit.

Djouce not only provides fantastic views over its neighbouring Wicklows and the sea, but its summit is rather unique. You’ll find a trig pillar astride an unlikely looking rocky outcrop, making for a brilliantly photogenic summit picture.

Enjoy sea views from a Wicklow giant

Djouce rises to 2,379 feet (725 m), making it the 10th highest peak in the range and one of the best for sea views. The Office of Public Works built and maintains a boarded trail to the top, constructed out of railway sleepers. This trail is the most popular, and is perfect for families as well as those uncomfortable with particularly rough, challenging ground.

Ascents of Djouce are always tough on the thighs, but the mountain’s accessibility is further improved by the range of car parks around its base and flanks. Thanks to the choice, you can park fairly high up if you want to, significantly reducing the metres of elevation you need to climb to reach the summit. When you do get to the top, a clear day will reward you with exceptional views.

You can head to the top of this charming peak throughout the year but in winter conditions it should only be attempted by experienced winter mountaineers with the appropriate gear. Be mindful that the weather can be changeable in any season and that the wind can be considerably stronger at the top.

Beautiful little trig pointed summit with great views. One of the Irish Hewitts of Wicklow. A great outing is to take in nearby War Hill too.
